Andy Zaltzman was born in obscurity in 1974. He has been a sporadically-acclaimed stand-up comedian since 1999, and has appeared regularly on BBC Radio 4. He is currently one half of TimesOnline’s hit satirical podcast The Bugle, alongside John Oliver (The Daily Show with John Stewart). He also writes for The Times newspaper, and is the author of Does Anything Eat Bankers? (And 53 Other Indispensable Questions For The Credit Crunched).
Zaltzman’s love of cricket outshone his aptitude for the game by a humiliating margin. He once scored 6 in 75 minutes in an Under-15 match, and failed to hit a six between the ages of 9 and 23. He would have been ideally suited to Tests, had not a congenital defect left him unable to play the game to anything above genuine village standard. Aged 21, when fielding at deep midwicket, he dropped the same batsman three times in fifteen minutes, and has not been selected by England before or since

Booo! don't be gone too long. WCP is the highlight of my fortnight.

Nice to see my comment there to be honest :). I wasn't taking a shot at you Andy. Merely the 100 or so articles recently published in Cricinfo. Most of the articles also bashes some aspects of the game that seem to appeal to the casual fans of the game. And what this is going to do is drive fans away from this format in England(as most of the articles seem to be from British newspapers). Which is terrible way of going about things when you are planning to float your own T20 League. No amount of IPL-bashing(for want of better word) is going to turn Indians away from IPL.

Thank you for alerting us to the potential perils of wikipedia. I've updated the Denis Compton page with a "citation needed" next to the alleged history you cited.

As always, great stuff, Andy. But I must admit that I was disappointed – why did you have to give an explanation to the comment by The Coder? There was no need. I am not trying to make you two fight, but I feel that the Coder and those 500m people mentioned by him don’t understand (y)our sentiments. The worst thing T20 (especially IPL) has done is that the new breed of casual fans has taken ownership of the game in such a way that I have read many comments like “This is the new order. You have to like what we like now, or else you are not eligible to watch or comment on cricket anymore” or something like “Australia and England treated us badly when they were in control, now it’s our turn”. I respect the comment from the Coder above. .... (CONTINUED BELOW)

...(CONTINUED FROM ABOVE).... But his earlier statement “500 million want it. You don’t matter. Hard. But true” is an example of this. Coder, this attitude from the new fans is what we resent. That’s the reason for “the 100 or so articles published in Cricinfo”. Is there no place for the traditional cricket lovers anymore? But I feel sad that “no amount of IPL-bashing (for want of better word) is going to turn Indians away from IPL”. I have been watching cricket for 30 years and for the last 8 years I have been a Level 2 coach. I firmly believe in one thing. It’s test cricket that has survived for 130 years. Interest in ODI’s has already waned, due to overdose. T20 will go the same way. Test cricket will never die. For whatever it’s worth, I am an Indian, but living in Australia.

Scruton Wole bit--hilarious! "live rhinocerous for wedding cake..." and "bowling bouncers at myself..." self-reflexive ridiculousness--more please. Whose voice is it? Who wrote that piece? Tell, tell--dying of curiosity.

Yea Andy, don't dwell on things that "The Coder" says. IPL has both pros AND cons. What's scary is that persons like him (or her) have successfully convinced themselves that cons don't exist (when the IPL is involved of course). So convinced in fact that they have counted "100 or so articles" on Cricinfo that ONLY bash the IPL?? 100 or so?? Maybe when I'm retired from all forms of work, I will take up the task of trying to count the 100 or so articles which apparently serve no other purpose than to bash the IPL. lol
