Afghanistan have World Cup in their sights

Afghanistan will begin their bid to secure a place in the 2011 World Cup by taking on Denmark in the opening game of the World Cup Qualifiers on April 1. It is the first of their five matches and upcoming opponents include Bermuda, Kenya, Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates.

If Afghanistan finish among the top four in Group B, they will progress to the Super Eights stage and, if they are among the top four at the end of the tournament, they will qualify for the World Cup

"Denmark is a must-win match because it would leave us needing one more victory to reach the Super Eights phase," Afghanistan coach Kabir Khan told AFP. "Afghanistan have progressed by leaps and bounds and, if we play to our potential, qualification for the World Cup is possible. Being a largely unknown cricket entity can only help us.

"We have not played much cricket at international level so other teams do not know much about us, but we know a lot about them, especially the United Arab Emirates as I coached them for two years.”

I think Afghanistan needs to win atleast 3 to 4 matches in the group round to make their chances of securing the place in top 4 of the tournament.
the strongest opponent the will face is Kenya and if they beat Kenya then I think no one can stop them from getting the 1st place in this tournament.

I feel making it to WC-2011 will be difficult for Afghanistan.
If they perform as per their potential and do not succumb against stronger opponents, they should be able to get an ODI status for the next four years.

Good luck to Afghanistan.

Posted by: Nazhand at April 3, 2009 12:57 AM

Dear Afghans one thing i want to mention is beside our pray lets make account for donation for our national cricket team if 1/100 our nation donates 10$ a year will be more than enough for our team. This is the only news i read my country's name is mentioned in a positive matter whereas always used to be mentioned in a war , killing and fighting news. I'm very proud now we are proving our talent to the world that we are a talented nation as well not only war.

So sad that Afghanistan will not be able to qualify for the world cup 2011 as it's not easy now...they did not carry any point to the super eight...the lost to Kenya, Netherlands, and then UAE,after winning Denmark and Barmuda, They shouldn't have lost to UAE, to carry at least 2 points...I hope Afghanistan qualify to the Super 6 at least. to play ODIs for four years. Good Luck.
