Canada well beaten by Zimbabwe A
Canada were well beaten by Zimbabwe A in their final warm-up match ahead of next week’s ICC World Cup Qualifiers. After winning the toss, Canada slipped to 35 for 4 after 15 overs and even though Sandeep Jyoti (32) helped them stumble past a hundred, their eventual total of 142 from 48.1 overs was never likely to be enough. Zimbabwe A, fresh from a successful tour of Namibia, lost wickets steadily, but an unbeaten 61 from Mbekezeli Mabuza steered them to a six-wicket win.
Now if the Zimbabwe A side is thrashing the leading associates. What justification is there in demoting Zimbabwe from full membership. Who are they going to play.
That's six wins in a row against Associates (4x Namibia, Canada, Ireland). Time to get these guys playing against Full Member 'A' sides, I think...
It's great to see Zimbabwe's resurgence. After they only managed a tie against Canada in the Four Nations T20 tournament last year, some questioned whether they can compete with even the Associates. Perhaps they were a little rusty going into that tournament (due to their largely empty international schedule), as once they started playing more often triumphs against Bangladesh and Kenya resulted, showing what they are really capable of.
Canada losing to Zim A in 35 overs is very disappointing. The batting coach Marvan Attapatu will be disappointed with 35 for 4 in 15 overs.
Maybe the real question what sort of sport has hundreds of millions of dollars spent of what is apparently six weeks of hit-and-giggle for its celebrities when teams that are supposed to the best behind the best are being run over by the A team of a side that is itself struggling for credibility.
I believe that given the proper chance to prove themselves and all fairness being applied in selection of players Zimbabwe really has the opportunity to be a great side because this team that is whipping the associate sides is only a second string team with untried players performing extremely well. Maybe drafting some of them into the senior team will produce competition among the none performers.
I firmly beleive with the well diversified ethnicity in Canada from the Top Cricket playing nations Canada can give tough time to the 2nd tier of playing nations. However, what we need is to get rid of politics in the game such as it appeared in India, Pakistan and England. We need a strong focus on performance and dedication to the game as opposed to backbiting at the helm of the organization. I personally think that we do not need businessmen at the top but some very players who know how to find talent and nuture with everdeveloping bench strength as India is doing now. I hope this is digged by the management and the tean in the right spirit of the game
I watched Zim play against Srii in Harare and the series could have eaily been 3-2 to zimbabwe as Zim just failed to capitalise from winning positions, but Zims issues are political...
In my oppinion its time icc conciders ,admitting us back into test cricket , our results in the past few months speak for them selves,if we get more matches aginst test playing nations ,we are likely to step our game up a notch.keep it up guys we are behind you.
zimabbwe is a good side but the problem is politics in our sport .i u loook the way play its good and i think we need players like masakadza in squad ..and our development side is improving very well...well done guyz ,we have to do better in next years world cup he have to play goo cricket.and wat i can say is to the former rebel players its high time to support our country the likes of andy flower ,now is the England coach we want u back guyz blignaught ,travis friend .we still neeed your support guyz .
zim 4 life .
Joseph what are u smoking pal, admitting Zim back into test cricket because the Zim A team managed to beat Canada, Ireland and Namibia?? Test cricket is for 5 days not 50 overs completely different kettle of fish I'm afraid pal. Bring in ex players and people who at least have a passion for the game as opposed to people who are just looking out for themselves and get the Logan Cup sorted out so at least they have some sort of first-class structure again. Readmitting them to Test cricket will result in them being humiliated again and any progress made simply erased.
I believe that now at least we should get playing time with full member teams because the A-tour has shown that we are improving but this shouldnt just stop there and more games are needed because the moment we are idle we lose shape and this happened last year against sri lanka when we could have easily won but because we weren't playin enuf games we lost.zc should ensure that we are playing oftenly
Zimbabwe's main weakness is clearly in their batting- despite their good scores against Kenya, they haven't been able to defend or challenge competitive totals. Put Vermeulen back in to open, maybe Charles Coventry as well (at least in the touring squad) and together with Masakadza, Williams and (hopefully) Taibu that'd make a pretty decent batting unit.
And I agree with Maehara, they'd benefit a lot from playing leading "A" sides more often, like South Africa A. If they can start winning against that sort of competition, then hopefully they'll start competing with the full ODI sides more consistently.
In the meantime, it's heartening to hear that players like Dave Houghton and Heath Streak are planning to become more involved in the coaching process.
Can anyone tell me what happened to Rizwan Cheema? He played as well as any international player, only to miss out on tours because he "did not have the right travel documents"... que pasa? Anyone have the skinny on this?
does anybody hear think streak will return ?? i hope he does. he was a great bowler. we need some past players 2 return and streangthen up our batting.
you go guys we 101% behind yah
