Beyond the Test World

We are very focused

Hamid Hassan

After all of our preparation, it is great to finally be in the Caribbean, particularly after all the delays in getting here.

In our rise up the cricket rankings, it had seemed at times that nothing can get in our way, but after the events of the last fortnight it turns out that volcanic ash can! We had been due to arrive in the West Indies for a training camp 10 days ago, but due to all the flight disruptions we ended up having to prepare for the tournament in Sharjah, which was very frustrating.

In our training camp we were very focused on ensuring our preparation was completely focused on Twenty20 cricket. We have a great coach in Kabir Khan and he was helping us learn new shots, as well as improving the way in which we can protect ourselves from being attacked by some of the most aggressive batters.

The journey to the West Indies was very long, as we had to stop in London on the way to get here. It was only the second time in my life that I had flown business class and I really liked the seats on our Emirates plane. I couldn’t sleep much, as I was thinking so much about the coming days, so I watched a couple of movies. It was the first time I had ever seen Avatar, which I really enjoyed, and Night at the Museum, although somebody told me afterwards that I am featured on a programme on the cricket channel so I will have to watch that on the way home.

We had the chance to go into London for a few hours and I went to the London Eye, although I didn’t go on it as I have been there before, and we also walked around Westminster and Piccadilly Circus. Some of the team hadn’t been to London before and Mohammad Shahzad, who is one of our batters, couldn’t believe it when I told him that there is an underground train that goes through London – he thought I was joking, as some of our team had never been on a train before, let alone one below the ground!

A few people at the hotel were really nice as they came up to us and wished us luck – it seems that everybody is getting to know the Afghanistan team now.

I struggled to sleep last night after we arrived late last night and there wasn’t much time to rest this morning as we had some pre-event activities to do this morning which were quite fun. We all had to have our pictures taken and then I had to do a really long interview for television which is something I always enjoy doing.

It was strange having to play a match the day after we had arrived in the country. When I was bowling, my legs felt so heavy, and I was worried that I had lost my pace, but my physio assured me that this is natural when you are jetlagged and that I will be ready for 1st May and the match against India. It was nice to take a couple of wickets, particularly as one of them was a yorker which is my favourite delivery.

We did very well today to beat Ireland, who are a very good team, and Dawlat Ahmadzai showed what a good bowler he is. Although we didn’t start very well in our innings, Mohammad Nabi and Asghar Stanikzai batted really well to take us home to victory.

Although we have played quite a bit of cricket abroad in international tournaments, such as the World Cricket League, apart from playing in Argentina last year we haven’t really played much cricket on this side of the world. It is quite strange to think that while we are playing in the day time here, it is the middle of the night in Afghanistan, although I am sure there were probably lots of people following the scores on the internet.

On Thursday morning we head straight to St Lucia, which we are all very excited about, as we prepare for the biggest match of our lives against India. We will then have a light training session and probably do some swimming tomorrow afternoon, before a final training session on Friday.
I promise to write more ahead of that game, so if you have any questions about the match let me know and I will try to reply to some of them in my next blog.

Salam dear heroes and pride of afghan nation. It’s always a pleasure to hear from u and read about ur cricket journeys. Though this event is special for al of us due to the fact that u will be facing the previous T20 champions on ur very 1st game. I am very nerveous on ur behalf, but I certainly wish that u do well and make ur selves and us proud.
We are underdogs in this huge tournament hence u guys have nothing to lose hence play like true and brave heroes which u definitely are! Whereas this is a privilege for all of us that ur playing at such a significant tournament- it’s like dream come true.
Well done and very best wishes.

Regards Daud from Dk

Hi Hamid! Its nice to read a cricketer's blog and his perspective. It has been great watching your team rise so strongly through the ranks and its always nice when an associate team gets the chance to challenge a test team. Even though I am Indian and support India, I hope you play very well and show the world your potential! All the best for a great WT20 for your team!

Congratulations on the warm-up win against Ireland. I have been following your side for a while now, and its GREAT to see you guys pick up more wins. I have a feeling that Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are going to surprise a lot more people in this tournament. I'm hoping you guys have a great world cup, other than the India game that is! I hope you make that one close and impress everyone :) I need India to win that game so that my tickets for the Barbados super eight games are not wasted :)

Good Luck

Assalam-o-Alaikum & Well Done vs Ireland.
Dear Hameed !
U had a gr8 tournament in kuwait bt here in WI, vs Ind in the absence of Sachin & Veeru, we have a good chance of stunning the world,
& the whole nation will really enjoy if u will up-root the stumps of Yuvraj & Dhoni, ( not on a No-Ball this time, as it happened many times in Kuwait, hahaha, I hope our Indian Friends won't mind it. ) It gives me a real pleasure, when I c many Indians sharing their feelings & best wishes wid us & our real Heroes. Thanks to all of you, & Best of Luck Batikot Xpress.

Congrats on your team's success! I am elated that your team played and won in Guyana.

I am curious to know how the people in Guyana treated the team (especially those who identify with you). You may not know this, but some of the "Indians" who came to Guyana in the 18th and 19th century were of Afghan extraction. I am sure there was some elation to see you play in Guyana. Faoud Bacchus (Baskh should be the right spelling) who played for Guyana and the West Indies shares some of your heritage I believe.

Best wishes to you.

Hi Hamad,
In T20 anything can happen. More over u have a big match against India. Not as an Indian, i wud like to say not to expect much from that match, a definite challenge for u guys. Since now Indians are used to play fast bowlers even if u guys bowl
150+ it will be tough for u guys to get them out.
The only advantage u have is India will not have a warm-up match before their first game.

I will suggest u guys go and enjoy the game against India, but don expect much!!!

Hello Hamid bruv!
I've been reading of Afghanistan beating Ireland so many times that it feels boring :( you guys have played each other so much in last year that your contest was as highly appreciated as SL & IND. But now comes the real contest(IND & SA) I wonder if ALLAH is gonna give us some kinda speciality in this T20WC..I swear to god if we guys make it to semi-finals am gonna have a big party out here in Stockholm for all of my friends to celebrate it!! BTW, good luck against IND on 1st may,I'm very thankful to those Indians who are wishing our national team good luck and then praying for their own team :D that's a joke. But what if we both Afgh & IND win against SA ;) How sweat that woud be ;P
Hamid Jan, bowl your yorkers like GUL did in last T20WC no wonder your 4 overs will be costing only around 10 runs and a couple of wickets..

First of all, best of luck for your T20 campaign! Is tough to be slotted in one of the toughest groups in the tournament, but the way to learn best is to learn it the hard way !
Wish you and your team luck and success in the matches ahead !
Its always refreshing to see a simple approach and simple but hard working people do well in life. I have followed the Afghan campaign through the ICC qualifier tourneys with a lot of zeal and interest, mainly because of the sheer consistency and enthusiasm that you guys seem to have in generous proportions.
I wish we see a lot more of this brave team in the years to follow. It would be fabulous and refreshing to see the Afghan team play test cricket one day !!

Hamid! Nice to see you guys playing as a bunch and making it good. Beating India will sure do good to your confidence. Do you have any strategy to counter Raina, not to mention he has been in good form in IPL lately. Dhoni is considered a clever captain and his placement of field and bowling rotations have mostly done the trick. What do you think of Indian middle order that has likes of Dhoni, yuvraj and Raina, not to mention Harbhajan who on his day can hit good balls out of ground. Hope to see your response. good wishes from an Indian!!

Hi Hamid
Congratulations for your WIN against Ireland. I read your blog. Is very interesting. I heard from you in this blog that you have great coach Kabir Khan. I am happy that you have a great coach. Well, About your match against India, Dont think about that too much....Indian players are just players like afghanistan players. But they are experienced in International level and even afghanistan players are bit experienced for the quite some time now. As a bowler, You have to remember that you have the ball with you. Only when you bowl the batsman can try to hit. Not all the deliveries bowled by you will go to boundaries. Batsman can hit only the delivery which he can hit, because even he is humanbeing. Just try to bowl in the area so that he is finding it difficult to hit. If you are a batsman, what are all the deliveries you will fi nd it difficult to hit? Just bowl them those. Yorkers wont workout always but it will work out well......Use yorkers but not always. ThanksandGoodLuck

Hi Hamid -

Your team is the toast of WT20. I wish you all success.

1. Pack fast bowlers against India and DONT bowl spinners. Do the reverse against South Africa.

2.Batting first - score of 130+ should be good against both the teams

3. Indian Bowling -
Zaheer: bowls only full length - batsmen to stand 1 yard in front of the crease to negate yorker length/swing
Praveen: Wait for 2 slow balls per over and whack it. Bowls better length than Zaheer. Watch out.
Harbhajan: DONT step out of the crease. Use the crease, get back and punch the ball behind square.
All others: Length will be full. Play slog sweep. Run scoring will not be tough against these sundries.

4. South africa bowling -
They will look to mix the length up. Go hard at the ball so even edges can fly to the boundary. Use the pace on the ball to score behind the wicket. IPL effect may result in them bowling more slower ones. Cash in on those deliveries.

Go Afghan!

Congrats to you and your team! Afghanistan is doing real well, and the passion of the Aghanis is showing in the cricket ground. I know the bowling is real good, but work needs to be done on batting. India will try to set field so that you give then catches. Be careful of this and dont give catch outs. If you avoid this, you have a good chance of beating them. Wish you best of luck in the whole tournament. Hopefully we see Afghanistan in super 8's.

Hey Hamid,
We really proud of you all guys. We Afghans believe that you are a match winner player. Inshaullah you will show your ability again like you showed in the qualifying and other matches. Regarding Indian team. I really like India too, therefore I want a best wishes and good game for them. However, I love Afghanistan, I will pray to Allah that Afghanistan win it.

Best of luck
Love for both teams

I am really proud of my Afghan team. I think you guys have done amazingly well to wave the Afghan flag around the world. It a great achievement that you are participating in T20 World Cup. Hamid, we have nothing to lose so go with full engery and show the Indians(our friends) that we are not what they have seen already.
I am a Fast bowler myself and would like to play for Afghanistan one day and i hope i get that chance. Go Afghanistan Go

Hamid Hasana wrora, kor de wadan and i hope that you and your troops do wonder. I'm a big fan of you guys. I'm from Peshawar Pakistan and living in US but i have been following your victories and stories and interview all the way along. I am very proud of you and my home boy Kabir Khan is finally making his cricket talk through you guys so kudos to him too. I see true fighters in you guys and i am sure that spirit is worth so much more than just being experienced so keep going the way you have been. Victory against Canada in the test match was something the writer couldn't have written better in his script. I had one home team in cricket until last year and now i have 2. Thal abad wose!!!

Hamid Bhai...Liked your blog...Simple and real one....I hope you guys go in Super 6 and give teams a kind of shocker they would remember for some time

Posted by: Anand Subramanian at April 29, 2010 9:30 PM

It's great to read a candid, simple blog written in a matter of fact manner. Also, please do not say that the game against India is the biggest of your lives. It is just another game and considering the way Afghanistan is playing these days, is one of many more to come. Good luck for the World Cup. I think we can safely say that Afghanistan is the pick by many fans, regardless of their country of origin, to go deep into the tournament.

Nicely written Hamid. I have started following Afghan team ever since you guys have won the ACC/ACC T20 and T20 WC qualifiers as well. I feel as a team you guys have shown consistency and I wish your team a good luck to do well in the upcoming matches.

One question though - How hard it is for some your team members to get used to the big tourney like this WC T20, playing against big crowds, against such heavy weights of cricket, etc. how do you guys mentally prepare for that.

Good Luck

Hamid good luck and very humbly written blog. I wish you and your team succeed and let the world know more about Afghanistan.

Posted by: DEEPAK SHARMA at April 30, 2010 9:00 AM

Dear Hamidbhai, I wish to suggest you some critical trick for your bowlers.1)None of your bowler shud drop even single ball away from the three stumps as far as line is concerned.2)Do not ball any short delivery less than 140k.3) Your fast bowler must bowl at ribs height above 140k.IF U HAVE THESE THREE WEAPONS WITH YOU , U CAN BRING SURPRISES OTHERWISE THERE IS NO MUCH CHANCE WITH YOU.
