We need exposure against the top teams

Hamid Hassan

What a year it has been for Afghanistan cricket! Winning the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in Dubai in February was a moment I will never forget; having the chance to play India and South Africa at the ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean was amazing and beating Pakistan at the Asian Games and securing a silver medal was one of the greatest moments of my career.

Obviously it would have been nice to have won gold but the fact that we pushed Bangladesh so close, particularly a strong team led by somebody as accomplished as Mohammad Ashraful, showed that we deserve a chance to play against the big teams on a more regular basis. We need exposure against some of the top ODI nations if we are to improve, and that is my main wish for 2011.

While the excitement of our Asian Games campaign won’t be forgotten in a hurry, we are all looking forward to our latest challenge, which is to win the ICC Intercontinental Cup against Scotland this week in Dubai. We beat Scotland in the group stages and have enjoyed a good record against them, but we know that we have to play well to beat them.

Although not that many cricket fans know too much about the ICC Intercontinental Cup, I think it is a really important tournament. My game has improved a lot as a result of playing in the tournament and that has helped me in the shorter format as well.

You certainly have to be a lot fitter to last a four-day game and I think that has helped us become a better fielding side as well. The fact that Ireland, who have set the standards in Associate cricket in recent times, have won the previous three titles, shows that you need to be an excellent team to win this trophy.

I am excited that the final is being played over five days as it will be like playing Test cricket, so I am keen to perform well. I think a five-day game makes you work harder to take wickets as there is less pressure on the batsmen to score quickly, so they take less risks.

We have been training at the new ICC Global Cricket Academy, which I am told is where the Pakistan and South Africa players prepared for the recent Test Match in Dubai, and it is an amazing facility. I wish we had something similar back home, but at least things are moving in the right direction in that regard and we are all excited about the building of new cricket stadiums in Kabul and Jalalabad. However, we need to have lots of pitches all over Afghanistan to ensure that in the future we can have the best young players in the world.

We have had our final day of training today ahead of the final starting on Thursday and I am hoping that thousands of Afghans living in Dubai will come and support us like they did at the Twenty20 Qualifier.

To lift another trophy this year would be a special moment for the team and I would quite like to add another medal to my collection.

I'm hoping Afghanistan do well against Scotland and I agree with what you've written. I wish the ICC would listen and try to involve the associates more in world cricket. I'd love to see the top associate sides tour against some of the test sides A teams for some exposure and experience.

Nice Blog;
Best of luck for the Final Match and i am sure if you bat well we will win this match very comfortable. Please Tell Karim to play to his potential. He is a very good player but he in the recent times i think he is not looking to the ball at all just want to hit sixes which is not possible. Karim just be in the pitch for 5 overs and then you will automatically hit sixes as you feet will move freely you hand and eye coordination will improve just be in the pitch for 5 over and you will see the difference.
Talking about Nowrooz mangal i love his calmness in the middle specially in 4 days game.
Dear all The team We trust your capabilities and we know you will win this Match. Just believe in your skills and try to utilize your skill this way you will beat Scotland very very comprehensively.
Best of luck to all of you

Yes, the intercontinental cup may not be that well known yet, but it is a stepping stone to greater things - you guys have the potential to surprise the world (as you have been doing for the last couple of years). Keep it up!

Afghani Cricketers, be work hard and get the ICC.
This is the time that you peoples can shows to the world of Cricket that Afghanistan is a country which have the ability to bet any team in cricket. Personally I am requesting to ICC to give a chance for Afghanistan to play with Bangladesh, west indes and other counties which are in low test ranking at the first they will play with countries which already have test cap and second Afghani Cricket team make a changes in there cricket.

Posted by: Dr izzatullah at December 2, 2010 7:33 AM

Afghanistan played well in the final of the Asian cup in guangzhou what a best play by our players specially from stanikzai
he is the best player but our bad luck and lack of our captains experience. we have to give chance for our youngsters because we have some best talent in our national player by giving them chance we can get the best of the result.

Posted by: Hanz at December 2, 2010 8:59 AM

Hi Hamid, thanks for ur wonderful blog. Being a Bangladeshi cricket fan i understand your passion for cricket as a new team with very limited facilities. I have observed & supported Bangladesh cricket team as a fan since 1994 ICC trophy when i was only 11 years old. I still can remember the media coverage of that ICC trophy whereby we have lost the chance to fit ourself in top three associate team to qualify for world cup. However, we didnt stop supporting our team with endless love & as a result we have won ICC trophy in 1997 by beating Kenya in final. Trust me, 70% of our population of 120 million of that time were only concentrating on radio live coverage, starting from a 7 years kid to 60 years grand pa came on road shouting " Bangladesh " "Bangladesh ". we were dancing as if we have achieved the meaning of life.....well, thats what i would say passion which takes Bangladesh in today's position. Pls have that passion for your country for your team & overall for Cricket !!

hi !

its great Hamid that u guys working hard and winning most of the games thanks to good bowling, batting is far from good enough to compete with other nations, the team needs young batsmen, not over 30 years, if u want to have a future u have to bring young guys in.

Posted by: Edrees Nawabi at December 2, 2010 3:09 PM

Very happy to see that positive performance of yours once again, you guys were awesome today, and hope the batsmen are in good form tomorrow and score above 300 runs, that would be great if the batsmen bat all day tomorrow and keep the run rate above 3.5, so wish you guys the very best of luck.

Thanks

I have followed Afghanistan's rise through the ranks from the very start. I believe the ICC's decision to remove associate nations from the World Cup is ill conceived and that the top associate nations should have more access to top flight opposition.

I'm not sure when the off season might be for the Afghanistan national side, but the New Zealand season runs from November to April and it would be wonderful if your best players could make the trip down to play here.

Some proven results on our green seaming pitches could encourage New Zealand Cricket to extend an invitation to the entire Afghanistan side to play down here. I for one would love to see Hamid Hassan steaming in at the Basin Reserve.

Posted by: dan at December 3, 2010 7:30 AM

hamid, i hope u get ipl contract

Posted by: Mrinaal Sharma at December 3, 2010 7:36 AM

All the very best for your endeavours and best wishes from India..
You can request your cricket board to somehow manage sending you to play with domestic league champs in dif countries.
There are many international crickets, who are not in their side now, playing domwstic leagues.. you will get exposure as well as the test of your mantle will be increamental.. Even for a very seasoned domestic player, it's very tough to make transition into international level (in a country like India). see if you can do so..
And ofcourse i will be following your match, though not in stands, but through cricinfo... add this also to your supporters list bro.. :-)

Posted by: Tim at December 3, 2010 7:59 AM

I agree with Jez - I'm five minutes' walk away from the Basin Reserve right now, and I would love to see Afghanistan play there. New Zealand's provincial T20 competition is on at the moment, with two overseas players per team - it would be great to see some of Afghanistan's players getting a chance to play in competitions like this, too.

Afghanistan is the best cricket team i have ever seen, it has the best bowllers but the only problem it has is that they get excited soon and they dont have a plan for matching and i think nowroz mangal should have a good plan for bowllers.

Posted by: Edrees Nawabi at December 3, 2010 6:18 PM

Great job boys, i have no words to say how you guys did it, 6 important wickets, that's not something easy in last session, hope we get a target of under 200, Hamid bro you're always the key, wish everyone of you the best of luck, and off course you all got our prayers.

I am a fan and am very happy to see your progress. I agree that you need more and more matches against ICC full members. I hope you make it to the next ODI world cups as well. To be very honest with you we (Afghans) are known to be short tempered and agressive but to see how you guys have handled 4 day games especially chasing down 450 od runs on foreign surfaces is just remarkable. I can sense the next pace sensation comming out of Afg. God Bless!

And in future they will play with determination and responsibility. All the best Afghanistan. It is also very disturbing that our Main bowler Hameed Hassan was not fit and he was injured but a team can not rely only on one player. I pray for Hameed to become fine and healthy very soon.
