Tendulkar breaks Cricinfo records

Sachin Tendulkar’s record-breaking didn’t stop on the field on February 24. He shattered many on Cricinfo. We recorded 45 million page views that day, and our highest number of unique users in India and the United States. The match report for the Gwalior ODI became Cricinfo's single most read piece of content.

It has always been so. If evidence was ever needed to confirm Tendulkar’s status as the world’s most-adored cricketer, it can be found in our logs. Month after month, year after year, he remains the most-searched cricketer on Cricinfo; by a huge margin, his profile page is the most visited player page on the site; and in any given month, headlines (often more than one) featuring his name are among the top 10 on the site.

Among other things, he also broke a couple of our servers that day.

Trust me, we make serious contingency plans for peak moments, and certainly we have never underestimated your love for Tendulkar. But obviously, there is no accounting for it. As he stood a couple of runs away from making history, so many of you logged in together that our servers blinked. It was a desperate few minutes, but in a sense, it was also a moment of vindication of your faith in us. Many of you got on Twitter to vent your frustration, and there was one post that stood out: “You know you are large when you crash Cricinfo.”

We hope to be ready for the next peak. We have just ordered some Tendulkar servers.

I honestly believe this is the best Sachin tribute yet :)

If this is the case, then I think his profile needs to be amended with his latest achievements. Please ask Mr. Sambit Bal to do so.

"Among other things, he also broke a couple of our servers that day." ... lol ... thats the best line of praise I have read.

Well it was expected. Having followed Cricinfo for past 6 year regularly, I remember seeing his name in Most Searched coloumn almost always. This shows his omnipresence to us - his fans which I hope includes you too. Thanks Master! We are proud of you and You are our Most Valued Jwell!!

Posted by: Saurabh Bhargava at February 26, 2010 5:55 AM

hey sambit nice to read that you have ordered some tendulkar servers. i just hope they are as brilliant as the man himself to carry the burden of an entire nation

Posted by: sekhar chowdary at February 26, 2010 5:56 AM

I thought the way he celebrated when he reached his 200 epitomised the man's persona. There was no running laps around the field, no aggressive gestures, nothing over-the-top. He did what he always does, raised both his arms, closed his eyes for a moment and quietly acknowledged that it had been done."

Posted by: Bishwajeet at February 26, 2010 5:57 AM

I am one of those fans who views his cricinfo profile more often but I never see it updated , you guys have updated other players profile and all unknown w.r.t. Sachin . I wish you will update it as soon as possible as it hasn't been updated from October 2008. I think atleast he deserves editing of his profile page once in a month's time that too because of his records each and every month. I think that will help both cricinfo and the cricket fans,as anyone who is a cricket fan do visit Sachin's profile atleast once in a week, so its better to have updated information atleast about him. We don't care whether other guys profile's are updated or not. I think it won't take much time for you to edit that stuff,so please do it for us.

I must admit I was one of those people venting against Cricinfo on that day. I had a bus to catch to Chicago and I was trying to postpone leaving till I knew that he had made 200. I just made it on time no thanks to you guys :)

but sachin has not..

Posted by: Al at February 26, 2010 6:08 AM

When Tendulkar retires (shudder at the very thought) the cricketing world will realise that there were two periods in cricket- BT and AT… BEFORE TENDULAKR & AFTER TENDULKAR!!!

Posted by: Shabber Imam at February 26, 2010 6:11 AM

Sachin is undoubtedly the greatest batsman ever in cricket history. 200 runs in an ODI is not a joke. He desrved this milestone in his remarkable career. His presence on the field is what his fans love the most ........kudos to Sachin

Posted by: Mandeep at February 26, 2010 6:11 AM

Tendulkar Servers !!! ha ha ha... great to see that... a true tribute... Also be prepared for the soon to occur 100 centuries event.

Posted by: uglyhunK at February 26, 2010 6:13 AM

Thanks for the info. I was actually wondering what could be the load on the servers in the final moments of his innings. And may be you can think about hosting cricinfo in a data center (Oracle ondemand or amazon etc) where there are plans to use resources on demand. No vested interest here :-)

Posted by: Manesh at February 26, 2010 6:16 AM

Yes, we were frustrated. We hope Dhoni will give strike to finish his 200 early. We were waiting till 47.4 overs. But I saw only one SIX in the last over for atleast 10-15 mins in cricinfo. We went mad and tried in other sites too. But we were not able to view the pages. :)
Anyway, nice to hear that you have ordered 'Tendulkar servers'. Do you think that will be enough??? I don't think so... :)

Posted by: Mandeep Singh at February 26, 2010 6:18 AM

Posted by: Vilas at February 26, 2010 6:19 AM

What is the point in being billed as the premier cricket website when one cant access live scores when actually needed - I had to follow bbc sport to see if Sachin got to his 200 - you guys should expect the increased traffic whenever India is playing and especially when a major milestone is about to be reached and yet time and again, Cricinfo fails to deliver and this is despite having a super fast internet connection in the US

Posted by: Shiven at February 26, 2010 6:23 AM

"We hope to be ready for the next peak. We have just ordered some Tendulkar servers." ... this is too good. A road, a pavilion and now Servers being named as "Tendulkar". Sambit, how about writing something on SiR Tendulkar, i Mean SR Tendulakr on these nomenclature ;-)

Posted by: tarun at February 26, 2010 6:23 AM

yeah
one could easily sense tendulkar crashing your servers with his century

Posted by: aamir at February 26, 2010 6:32 AM

being a cricket purist i love tests over odi
but watch odis for shear action and creativity
so when india bats i allways hope sehvag is not the first one out, but in the last one day from the first ball sachins touch was such that i was for once happy to see sehvags back,
it was as if a genious artist was paining a masterpeice with deft strokes, there was no brute force just caressing touches that soothed teh mind and created euforism
welll done

Posted by: SAB at February 26, 2010 6:32 AM

Oh! This is one is one of the best tributes to Sachin!! I and everyone at work was cursing cricinfo as nobody was able to open Live Scorecard after Sachin passed 190 mark.. I hope he breaks a few more servers in coming years..

Posted by: Harsh at February 26, 2010 6:35 AM

Hahaha i knew it, it was going to happen one day. Your servers must be praying right now that hope India doesn't come in coming WC final and may be please no Ind-Pakistan in final ... hahaha only that can break your server again i guess. Btw. did anyone tell you look like young Amol Paleker .. i don't know but i have this nasty habit of comparing faces.

Exceptional article Sambit. It sums all the praise for a man who is almost God. Its nice to read all comments from all SRT lovers. I was telling my frustrated son (when the page could not refresh for minutes) that there are many hits on the page but 45 M is huge #. It is certainly a wise decision to have purchased few Tendulkar servers. Great going SRT and Cricinfo.

Posted by: Ajay at February 26, 2010 6:42 AM

Being unable to see score updates on cricinfo, I inferred that guys who performs the job of updating live cricinfo website scores also get lost watching such historical moment-once in a lifetime..so much that they forgot to update score too! Love you Sachin...!

Posted by: Lal at February 26, 2010 6:55 AM

Can we have a separate www.cricinfo-tendulkar.com page and dedicated servers for matches played by Tendulkar (Indian team)?

Posted by: Shridhar Jaju at February 26, 2010 6:55 AM

If I need to check SRT's profile, I do not need to type the entire name. It's always available in just a click.

Its a fitting tribute by Mr. Sambit Bal, editor of the best cricket website in the world, to Sachin Tendulkar, the best cricketer in the world.

Mr. Bal, if India reaches the World Cup final next year, I think you should keep a ready stock of backup servers. And yes, you should charge it all to SRT ;)

Posted by: Charu at February 26, 2010 6:56 AM

On a serious note, I think Cricinfo should include a column of '200s' in Cricket stats. 200 is NOT a century.

Posted by: Raghu at February 26, 2010 6:57 AM

The most sad thing is BCCI wont let people see the moments. I saw a youtube video of his 200th run yesterday and today the video has been deleted due to a copyright claim by the BCCI. Nice going jerks, he is possibly the only reason why I still stay up at 5:00 am to watch cricket.

Posted by: Punit at February 26, 2010 6:57 AM

I think this has got to be a marked compliment to the master. To crash cricinfo takes a lot and if any could do it it was only Sachin. But nonetheless you guys were back up even though there was a delay so kudos to your team! You & your team have been the unsung heroes of cricket...

I believe this is a fantastic factual testimonial - supported by hard facts and real-world numbers - of the impact that the legend has on us mortals. ABSOLUTELY no other personality can warm the heart of us Indians, and likewise other cricket fanatics around the world, like Sachin can and does.

It was heartening to read what Harsha had to say about politicians frittering away the mandate that the people give them, but this man continues to deliver time and again, thereby binding an entire nation together. 45 million views is one thing, the smile that he has brought to the faces of a billion people and more across the globe over the last two decades, cannot be quantified.

THANK YOU Sachin. Thank you Sambit. And - thank you Cricinfo.

wow!! 45 million viewers simulatneously! In the history of internet, is that the most no. of users accessing a single page at once?

I had anticipated that the cricinfo server will go down at such a moment. Thus, I had to run to my gym around the 42nd over mark to ensure that I don't miss the moment. (for once the trip to the gym was not to look at the girls.) All the people in the gym thought I was a lunatic jumping around like that with my headphones on.

On that day I was in office till late night and I generally prefer Cricinfo as the conetent and commentry is good here (not some masala news on other Cricket sites).

On that day I agree that many viewers were trying to view the page, load would have been extraordinary. But on that day it looked like cricinfo was very slow and was not able to show the score correctly. This is happenening from a long time.

Being a big fan of cricinfo, I wish that we will not face any other those kind of situation again.

Like other Botham, Hadlee, Bradman and Sobers. This list of player not last more than 17 year international cricket. Mumberkiar Little Master entering 21st year in world of cricket. How long he has wait invitation from Buckingham Palace.

This sort of thing happens regularly - most recently with the India-RSA test, and when Tendulkar was blasting away. Perhaps there will always be moments when even the best laid plans go awry, however, i believe that it is a testament to the popularity and quality of cricinfo that no matter where a match is being played, and no matter which two teams are playing against each other, there will always be one source that 99% of the cricket loving population log onto - cricinfo.

Sambit cricinfo uses jsp pages basically and server the technology you are using is J2EE offcourse with AJAX and all those as support tools .but JSP simply do not have the capability to handle that many users .. Guess You can try to convert it to aspx using .net . May be this would help when the Genius is at work again but the fact of the matter is you would require asp as the genius does that almost every match .Even though he doesnot socre 200 each time but people hope that if any one can score that its him only ..Salute You Sachin ..Keep Going

For all those who want to compare Sachin with Bradman and

say Bradman is the greatest batsman ever, I would say the

following things that would end the debate for ever in

favour of Sachin.

1. When Bradman played the game, cricket was played less

professionally and more of a fun game and for pastime. So,

there is no motivation for the bowlers and only few played

with pride for their countries. Now, when Sachin is

playing, due to professionalism and commercialisation,

there is too much cricket being played and not adequate

rest for Sachin between matches or series. Add to this

hectic schedule, Sachin also plays in the IPL for 8 weeks a

year.

2. Though people say that Bradman played on uncovered

pitches and without any protective gears - the first thing

is uncovered pitches were never inconducive for batting.

Otherwise, not only Bradman, there were quite a bunch of

other players who also scored lot of hundreds during that

time. So, even Sachin also would h

i thought of accumulating this force, power & platform to raise request to BCCI & ICC to honour Sachin R Tendulkar - the Maestro with the title of "SIR". SRT deserves the title while he is playing & towards his magnificent contribution to the Game & country - obviously to one of the richest sport bodies in the world BCCI.
Support from all you dear ones & team at cricinfo..raise voice for this Champion who never demands & expects anything...because he deserve "everything"

Posted by: vaitheesh at February 26, 2010 12:56 PM

SRT is cricket in its purest form. His only goal is to play cricket for cricket's sake and this is never tainted by fame, money etc. He humbles everyone. We do not deserve to say "he deserves it". Only GOD can say.

Why don't you periodically publish a list of top searches on Cricinfo? Also, go an extra mile and embed a social media trend showing the latest topics buzzing on Cricinfo comments/feeback i.e. "Buzz" a la Twitter and Yahoo? Exposing a little stats around the top searches, most searched cricketers, etc would provide exciting glimpse at the "popularity" of issues, cricketers, and topics in near real-time. Think I am pushing social media a bit too much, well that's one of the areas I focus in business development & venture funding in the Silicon Valley. Sincerely, -Pankaj

P.S. I am glad to see one of my suggestions embraced by cricinfo: Adding Weather info. to match pages. I made that suggestion during last year's New Zealand matches that were affected by rain.

well done sachin but to be honest, the pitch was dead, small boundary's and extra 5 overs of power play compared to to how one dayers were played etc .... u have to take these things into account! the way dhoni was batting, he could have made 200 aswell if they batted for extra 10 overs!!! I can see this 200* being smashed within a few years, especially when teams come to play in india, we produced some of the flattest tracks in the world, it's a batting paradise! I would have preferred if sachin had made 200* outside india on a difficult/bouncy track.... thats when i would rate him as the world's best! for me personally ....brian lara, and ricky ponting are far greater!

Beyond any shadow of doubt, Tendulkar is truly great ! But spare a thought for Gavaskar. Gavaskar took the nation by storm in 1971. Till then, no one in Indian cricket had ever had the guts, the technique or the commitment to stand up to such hostile fast balling as he did. Records inevitably tumbled before him. Bradman was passed, 34 centuries scaled, 10,000 runs posted. All unheard of and unthinkable till then. Gavaskar, in a one-man club in the 70s and 80s, carried the hopes and aspirations of a nation. Imagine, a young lad’s fantasy being ignited by all this, and saying to himself “I want to be like him”. Imagine the lad being inspired by the opportunity to finally meet his role model face to face when still in his tender years. Who knows, perhaps Tendulkar might still have been a leading batsman in world cricket, but it cannot be denied that Gavaskar, in some subliminal and unconscious ways, helped launch Tendulkar toward the rarified peaks we see him scaling.

Although he (tendulkar ) is holder of most of the records
still he will regret for one thing
if india will not be able to win 2011 world cup
its the just missing feather
he single handedly batted in 2003 world cup
but can't win it
I still remember the shot he got out
i knew he went on to hit that ball of McGrath for a six
but it was a decieveing slower one
didnt retained its pace
and tendulkar lofted it back to bowler and australians had known they have won yet another world cup

Posted by: Zeeshan Ahmed at February 26, 2010 9:52 PM

I think he is the best one. Better than Sir. Bradman as he scored 30,000 runs in same period as compare to his 6996 runs in limited circle.

Bradman started cricket after great depression so talent from teams was not possible. Bowlers of those days were not more than club bowlers of today cricket. It happened only two times when bowlers took 100 or more wickets which Bradman faced. From 1931 to 1937, he faced no bowler with 100 wickets. Then Verity and then never happened again. Remaining one is Tate, who left cricket against Australia in early thirties. So many argue that he faced Laker and Bedser, are neglecting the fact that he played only three test against Laker. At that time, he was in a building phase and same case of Bedser was there. He played both bowlers after world war II. He had full experience while they were starting only. So I think achievements of Tendulkar are more than him as he played cricket in two regions. Without proving in four to five continents no one is best

I was so tense as Sach was approaching 200. But when finally he got it I was so relaxed. Master you are the best. Thanks for all joy and happines you've given us from last 2 decades. I am not sure if I'll follow cricket after you retire. Keep going sir. I can take so much proud in saying that I belong to Sachin Tendulkar's country.
PS: I strongly believe that Sanjay Manjrekar and Ian Chappel should apologize to Sachin for whatever crap thay've said in the past.

Sambit - In the last one year Cricinfo quality has definitely deteriorated. You seemed to have introduced new services without mastering them.. Did you hire your IT guys from Microsoft lol? Quite often there are different score when one looks at your summary tab and Full Scorecard to quote one example. You are fortunate that SRT brilliance has made everyone take a charitable view of your problems. But as you know business runs on quality and performance and not on charity. Hope you will take this opportunity to pull up your socks. Your website is today the most informative than any other cricket website.. Hope it remains the best in terms of customer experience as well. Wish you the very best

Good luck Cricinfo, hope you get some more servers!!

In the past few days, after reading so many articles and tributes to Tendulkar, no words are left for me to say. In a country where we are lacking many iconic sportsmen he is our our biggest icon. He is a role model not only on the field but out of field too. I have never seen a more humble person then him(Some of the so called bollywood superstars must take some lessons from his life). No doubt he is India's proudest possession. Many call him god. I will restrict myself to be a proud citizen of this country who shares his nationality with this "Cricket God".

Posted by: Sameer Pathak at February 27, 2010 5:39 PM

Sachin Tendulkar has proved that he is not just a cricketing icon, he is a world sporting icon. He is at par with the best the world has ever seen PELE, MARADONA, ARNOLD PALMER, ROGER FEDERER, JESSE OWENS & MICHEAL SCHUMACHER. His sustained excellence and his longevity has taken him to a whole new level...and a whole new stature. Let us not demean the achievements of SRT by asking for awards for him. Gandhiji never got NOBEL and Noble committee is repentant of the fact and not Gandhiji. I know one thing for sure, people of this generation will teach the next few generations about a man named Sachin Tendulkar and how he embodied what all REAL MEN should embody...a never say die spirit, quest for excellence, a character grounded in humility and an ethic of unparalleled hardwork. He is a man for generations, do not limit his achievements as a sporting hero or icon...he is way way beyond those boundaries. He is a true role-model, a true son of soil and a true Indian.

Posted by: Iqal sekhon at February 27, 2010 6:21 PM

i just wonder what is going to happen if somebody from china starts palying cricket and has the same type of following for the game. maybe technology will be more advance and servers will not need to crash. such is the population. keep makin dead wikets in india and the batsmen will keep battering the bowlers to maybe a triple century in onedayers some day. in the old days the ball swang more earlier and the filed restrictions were not there. no wonder sachin scored his first ncentury in onedayers after 70 matches and only when field restrictions were in place and he had the previlage of starting to open the innings. but maybe thats what the majority of the public want to seen in india. bowlers jailed and batsman making merry. maybe some body will make a double hundred in t20 some day.a very good batsman but great?

After this inning, he is the best. No doubt, he is better than others. People are comparing him Sir. Bradman which I think is not justice as he is still going on. Actual comparison will come in future, may be after 2015.

He will soon become first batsman with 100 hundreds at international level.

Actual comparison of him with Sir Bradman is not possible as he played 50 different grounds in test as compare to his 10 grounds. For leading 30 wicket takers, Don faced none. With 50 only one and then 100 only five and then 150 seven with Voce 98 wickets but it is not his fault. It happened only two time in his career that he faced bowlers with 100 wickets that were Verity and Tate. In Tendulkar case atleast 20 bowlers took 200 or more.

May be from actual talent point of view, both are equivalent. As both proved better than others among their contemporaries. I think both are legend and proved themselves in different era.

Posted by: Zeeshan Ahmed Siddiqui at March 11, 2010 6:44 AM

He is the best test batsman now and arguably the best including all. With 93 centuries, he is something extra ordinary. His acheivements are more than Dravid, Ponting and others. Now new debate starts either he is better or Don Bradman. I think it is very difficult to judge who is better as both are legend from two different eras. As I think he is better than Don

The batsmen near to Bradman were Herbert, Hammond, Hobbs and Headley. Herbert batting average is 66.85 against Austraila as compare to his 89.8 but he played bowlers like Mailey, Grimmett, Reilly (three great leg spinners), Iron Monger and Gregory. Suppose if he was batsman of Australia, definetely he could improve his average, may 80 to 82. Headley batting average was 71.23 against England with only one timeless match. If he could get more, he could improve further his average but when he faced Australia, his average drastically changed to 37.33 only. It means actual difference between Herbert and Don was not too much.

Posted by: Murty at April 26, 2010 2:08 AM

Dear Editor,

Please pay a tribute to the bump catch claimed by Sachin off Rahul Dravid in the Semi final. Also please pay a tribute of how the "humble" man did not walk when he gloved the ball nicely to Dhoni in the final. I just want to know when this hypocrisy will end? :)

Posted by: Ritwik Bhuyan at April 27, 2010 8:01 AM

@Murty - If only you had an unbiased mind, you would have known that Dravid got the benefit of the doubt. He merely escaped simply because the replays were sort of inconclusive. If that in your book translates into 'claiming a bump catch', then you are not even worth debating about.

As for glovving the ball, sure, from now on he'll start walking whenever he knows he's out. But on one condition - HE SHOULD BE GIVEN THE AUTHORITY TO CHANGE THE UMPIRE'S DECISION IF HE'S WRONGLY GIVEN OUT FROM NOW ON!

If you can ensure that the above condition is met, I guarantee you he'll start walking from now on.

One year gone by...

What a exhilarating day that was for an Indian team fan. Truly unbelievable stuff from Baasu It took quite a while for it to sink in but jeez the memories are just too pleasant ... here are some of my memories and hope that others share theirs :

1. Cricinfo servers dying after being pwned by Sach
2. The Server on a padosee site that cant be named going down for different reasons
3. The various newspaper headlines one better than the other (Thanks to Holybaba and others )
4. Sambit Bal's finally writing a memorable article - It was about CI ordering "Tendulkar Servers" after the current ones crashed and burned
5. Shastri rubbing it in by repeatedly mentioning Anwar having to use a runner
6. Sunny Gavaskar hailing the Great man the next time he met

Name: Email Address:
Comments: characters left
When Sambit Bal joined Wisden as its Asia editor in 2001 after a varied career in journalism that included reporting on crime and politics and editing a monthly features magazine, he gave himself two years to indulge in a passion. But eight years later he still hasn't been able to wrench himself out of a job that has so grown on him, he sometimes wonders if there is life beyond cricket for him.
