« Sledging 101 | A call for more cricket »

Gambhir is only partly correct
From Raghu, India
This is about the article on Cricinfo Dated 11th Nov 2008 "I don't regret the Watson episode" - Gambhir. I guess Gambhir is right in expressing his feelings over Sledging but the actions performed may not be the right ones.
Also his comments about losing out on Man of the series to Ishant Sharma. Frankly it's a naive comment. Being lucky.... absurd. Everybody gets their due. Brian Lara scored a 400 and Sehwag scored a 300 against SA...they did not win the games. On the docile pacer unfriendly batsman friendly indian pitches, Ishant bowled his heart out to be the joint highest wicket taker.
Gambhir should learn from his captain and his vice captain about doing their jobs quietly and getting the results and enjoying the team's success rather than cribbing about not getting a paltry purse.
To say "I dont regret the Watson episode" is pathetic. The intention of the one test ban was to make sure that Gambhir does not do this again. By saying this, he is communicating that if the same scenario occurs he will do the same thing, i.e. elbow Watson. Thats not acceptable. I wonder what media, senior players and BCCI would have done if this was a statement made by an Australian player.
The truth is that the Australians play within the boundaries of the laws and rules. These laws and rules may be incorrect and may need changing. So blame the entity that forms these laws.
The Indians want to play under laws and rules that according to them are right but are not on paper. Thats not correct and they should understand that. They cant be the angry young men always and complain only when they lose.
I hope a significant contributor to Gambhir not getting the Man of the Series was his being banned. Adhering to code of conduct should be as important as on field performance.
I was upset with Gambhir's ban in the last test. Even though the sledging was over the limit, the use of elbow cannot be justified at all. Hope you wont repeat that again. You could have won the man of the series award, and more than that, could have contributed to an even bigger victory.
Australians use sledging as a weapon when they are frustrated. We have seen this many times over the years. Moreover, it is their opponents who always get punished for reacting to the nasty sledging. You were tactically sledged in to reacting badly, which invited a punishment, which also added to the australians hope and joy that they could win the match by getting the star player banned.
Gambhir, you are one of the most important factor in the world's no:1 team in the making. Hope you learn from this lesson and move on. All the best.
