Battle of the spin giants

For several years, they formed one of the most potent spin-bowling combinations in world cricket; now, they’ll be adversaries, each trying to push his team into the IPL final. Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh have both been among the best bowlers in the tournament so far. Of the spinners who’ve bowled more than 30 overs, only R Ashwin fo Chennai has a better economy rate than Kumble’s 6.46. Harbhajan’s economy rate is only marginally more, but he has compensated by taking more wickets, and has a far better average.

Breaking up the performances of the two bowlers by stages in the innings, it’s clear that Kumble’s economy rate has been exceptional in the Powerplay overs and then again at the end. Harbhajan hasn’t done badly either, and has a better average and economy rate than Kumble in the middle overs. Twelve of Harbhajan’s 15 wickets have come in the second innings – average 17.67, economy rate 7.18 – simply because Mumbai have batted first in ten out of 14 games. Nine of Kumble’s 12 wickets have come in first innings (Bangalore have chased in ten of 14 games) at an average of 30.33 and an economy rate of 6.85.

In the two matches played between the these teams, Kumble has figures of 3 for 59 from eight overs; Harbhajan has 3 for 63 from eight. Who’ll take the honours when the stakes get the highest?

Kumble and Harbhajan in IPL 2010
Bowler Balls Wkts Average Econ rate
Anil Kumble 335 12 30.08 6.46
Harbhajan Singh 273 15 20.20 6.65

Anil Kumble 42 0 - 5.85
Harbhajan Singh 66 3 27.33 7.45

Anil Kumble 204 7 33.14 6.82
Harbhajan Singh 150 7 22.85 6.40
Kumble and Harbhajan in the last six overs

Bhajji's PP overs econ. rate might not look rate but it should be remembered that the 3 wickets were Hayden (after he had smashed Zak out of the attack), Gilly (in the first over) and M. Vijay after the batsman had found his T20 game. The 3 wickets really say something !

breathe taking neck to neck figures of one legend and his sishya.

It is more of a Master vs Student, absolutely cannot be equated in the same plane.

Posted by: Vikaas Patel at April 20, 2010 7:31 PM

They both are neck to neck when it comes to bowling but i think Harbhajan will prove hand with bat, and also i am sure he wants to show his young self so he will be bit more pumped than Kumble.

Posted by: Guruprasad S at April 20, 2010 8:50 PM

Harbhajan has been tough to hit sixes off, this season. He seems to have a yorker length delivery which makes it difficult for batsman to pick him for runs. It will be interesting to see Bhajji when he is defending a moderate total for Mumbai Indians. As for Kumble, I am expecting him to play a vital role for RCB in semis. While Bhajji usually comes after Malinga and Zaheer, Kumble often gets himself to bowl against the opposition's most dangerous batsman.

On a different note, why is Pankaj Singh's name not included in RCB's squad as listed in cricinfo ?
His name also doesnt appear in the overall squad which cricinfo puts up before every match, although he has played two matched this season.
Please correct this.

The only reason why harbajhan singh has more wickets, is becasue bajhi has more overs in the powerplay{the period where wickets are most likely}.

Posted by: vinesh at April 20, 2010 9:24 PM

bajji is beter this year becuase he is playing international cricket. that's why,but anil kumble is the best spiner.all time

Posted by: GoodCricket at April 20, 2010 11:12 PM

Good comparison.

Posted by: himaz at April 20, 2010 11:54 PM

both spiners have a chance to move there teem to final but mombai need to go final

Posted by: sunny at April 21, 2010 12:36 AM

looks like harbhajan is better than kumble in every aspect

Posted by: Ketan Mayecha at April 21, 2010 1:07 AM

All stats are irrevelant in T20 format. One batsman cn turn it around in a couple of balls. T20 is like fast food - enjoy the taste and get back to work....

Posted by: Shesh at April 21, 2010 1:19 AM

Rajesh, good stats but the title sound ridiculous. In the grand scheme of things, its a dis-respect to Kumble to compare Bhajji with him. Kumble is a class apart in every aspect of the game and personality. Bhajji is just a spoilt brat who can spin the ball a little. A title like "Kumble-Bhajji stats" would look a lot better than "Spin Giant". There is only one Giant and that is Kumble.

Posted by: Arjuna R at April 21, 2010 3:59 AM

Wow, Their stats are so close, I think Anil has the edge though!

Posted by: Siva at April 21, 2010 4:08 AM

I never thought that H.Singh is as reliable as Kumble. but stats show that he is more aggressive and very productive when delivering economic overs or wickets (in IPL 2010). Great work Bajju.

Posted by: shavri at April 21, 2010 4:50 AM

Excellent stats, both of them have same amount of weightage in their team, Kumble is one step ahead with his vast experiance and also doing a fine job of captaincy.....

Posted by: Eshwar at April 21, 2010 5:08 AM

There is no question that this would be a fantastic encounter to watch. I've always been a huge fan of old jumbo all the while, however, I support Mumbai. Kumble, you've gotta be an exception for one match and let Bhajji take honours this time.

Posted by: Noel at April 21, 2010 5:18 AM

The article 'Kumble confident of putting it past Mumbai'" says "Pitches have slowed down over the course of the IPL, but Kumble was confident about the condition of the Brabourne track for the crunch game."
REMINDER !! - The game is being played at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, not the Brabourne.

Both the spinners are good. Today who ever plays well is their game either RCB or MI. As MI are fully packed team to perform and they are on the upper hand. Sachin Tendulkar is the key to give a good platform for the MI batting. If sachin tendulkar gives a good platform the momentum continues in the next batsmens also. Comming to bowling department every one are excellent. Fielding wise jonty rhodes giving a good support. So i hope MI reach Finals and would be the champions of IPL 2010.

by seeing above analysis bhajji is slightly better than jambo in this ipl....MI will win this semi war againest RCB..in mumbai ....

Posted by: Arul at April 21, 2010 5:52 AM

kumble vs. Tendulkar and Harbajan vs. Dravid. A treat for viewers and only IPL can do it.

Posted by: Venkat at April 21, 2010 5:56 AM

The title is not appropriate. Harbhajan Singh is never a giant in spin bowling. Yes he has won many a match for india but any spinner who gets the backing of captain like Harbhajan got would have achieved those landmarks. Anil Kumble is sheer genius and the spirit and gentlemanliness he has cannot be compared with Harbhajan at all.

Posted by: Riaz at April 21, 2010 6:01 AM

Well, I think the main difference between Bhaji and Kumble is their batting...the former can be a devastating hell for the opponents with his batting while the later is a mediocre with the bat!

Posted by: Naresh Ajna at April 21, 2010 6:03 AM

RCB will win today as MI will be kicked off from IPL its enough wins for team this year, i will be loved to see MI loosing today. Jumbo & Co will conqere them

We can Not Compare Harbhajan with Anil Kumble's performance. As per my view Kumble will win the Race in this Spin giants war.......

Posted by: Syed Isteaz Zonaide at April 21, 2010 6:23 AM

Looking at the stats u do not always get the actual representation of the overall situation. I believe Harbhajan has looked much more DANGEROUS than Kumble.

Posted by: nik at April 21, 2010 6:56 AM

Harbhajan has still a long way to go. You cannot compare kumble and Bhajji

Posted by: sunil chitlangia at April 21, 2010 6:58 AM

anil having vast experiance will show his class and teach few lesson to bajji.anil should win battle in between two spin giants of india

Posted by: IPLWatchers at April 21, 2010 7:48 AM

Hope B'lore beats Mumbai today, because DC is sure to come into the final and its easier for DC to beat B'lore in a final than M'bai

Posted by: Sriram at April 21, 2010 8:21 AM

Looking forwad to Jumbo vs Tendlya in the powerplay, one contest worth a million

Posted by: sivakalyan k at April 21, 2010 8:25 AM

I am sorry to say, not at all fair to compare Kumble with bajji. Though I am big fan of bajji there is huge contrast.
The former is undoubtedly Legend(A role model), but the latter we can not term him into legend but undoubtedly he is Star performer we can call him Great but not Legend. I hope most of you agree with me

Posted by: Niki at April 21, 2010 8:30 AM

A Very well compiled and presented Stat!! Yes indeed a chance to see Kumble and Harbajan on opposite sides. that too in a format where the Batsmen consistently need to keep going at the bowler is special. Whoever has the better night is probably going to also find himself in the winning side.Difficult to say that with total conviction because so will Styn , Malinga and our very own Zaheer want to walk away with the bowling honors for the night. Offcourse Sachin to watch for and All in twenty overs....

Posted by: anees at April 21, 2010 8:45 AM

i'd like to see ojha, ashwin & murali karthik added to the same comparison... then we'll get to see who's the best ipl spinner.... atleast ashwin & ojha need to be added to this table.. that wud compare all 4 semi final teams spin strength..

Posted by: Chandrakant at April 21, 2010 9:51 AM

Good Analysis! It will be a treat to watch both of them playing against each other. It will be even exciting to see Bhajji against Taylor and Robin. I think Mumbai holds the advantage in this match, but somehow my gut says its going to be RCB who wins the battle!

Bhajji's PP overs econ. rate might not look rate but it should be remembered that the 3 wickets were Hayden (after he had smashed Zak out of the attack), Gilly (in the first over) and M. Vijay after the batsman had found his T20 game. The 3 wickets really say something but Warne is much better then Bhajj & Kumbal

let see who take sachin wicket .Anil kumble or.....other bowler

Posted by: Andrew at April 21, 2010 11:31 AM

Interesting the powerplay stats suggest Harbhajan has been more willing to risk going for runs in order to get wickets while Kumble is more intent on constricting the batsmen.

Posted by: R.Gopinath at April 21, 2010 11:43 AM

Bhajji is a spoilt & mannerless brat. Jumbo is a gentleman in every sense. Hey how the hell did you think of comparing Jumbo with Bhajji.

Posted by: Faisal at April 21, 2010 11:45 AM

It is such a ridiculous that Title is Battle of the spin giants - common what is this Harbajan can not rated Spin giant, he is not in the category of Kumlai, Murali, Warnie he has to prove more to become that category of giants. can be a battle between Bhaji and Kumble because in this only one spin giant that is Kumble.

Posted by: SRINIVAS at April 21, 2010 11:46 AM

Please don't compare Kumble with Harbajan!
It's comparing an Ocean with a river!

Posted by: Nitin M. Sakharkar at April 21, 2010 11:51 AM

If u ask me whom should i really like as spin bowler n as real sportman then its Anil Kumble but real spin of the ball is bajji n i wish him do well bcz mumbai has 2 win this semi final n i wish the would be between Chennai n Mumbai.........

Posted by: srinivas at April 21, 2010 11:58 AM

There is no camparison between bhajji, and kumble is legend and wiket taker in crucial moments.

Posted by: Benson John at April 21, 2010 12:00 PM

Only difference between them is the captaincy....Harbajan is totally free to perform to his maximum!

Posted by: Srinivas at April 21, 2010 12:13 PM

No comparison between them. Anil is a legend. He can take wickets with good economy rate. Do not see the stats of IPL. we have to see the career wickets and economy rate. Bhajji is nowhere nearer to Great player Anil Kumble.

Posted by: Bill O'reilly at April 21, 2010 12:16 PM

There are only 2 spin giants in the world. That's Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan. Don't kid yourselves.

Posted by: Asif Rathod at April 21, 2010 12:36 PM

Well, This is T20 man. Kumble and Bhajji are spin giants in test cricket not over here. But, you can't deny that both performed remarkably in IPL T20 as well. Bhajji's gona take more wickets but Kumble is Run stopper.

Posted by: SNalla at April 21, 2010 12:53 PM

The Title of the article is misleading...I thought Warne is the other giant (not Bhajji).

Posted by: Hridya at April 21, 2010 1:06 PM

The major difference I feel in between the 2 is that Kumble is a tamed warrior and Harbhajan is an untamed warrior. Any way it is good for Harbhajan & India for the real war in West Indies (The T20 World Cup). Good Luck to both of you.

Posted by: neelesh chopra at April 21, 2010 1:52 PM

They are both exceptionally talented but its the batsmen who influence the final result.Iam going for Mumbai(Sachin of course)

Posted by: sreekumar at April 21, 2010 1:59 PM

while bhaji is one of the best spinners in world cricket now. he is nowhere near kumble...Kumble is a living legend....kahan raja bhoj...kahan gangutheli....

Posted by: notreal at April 21, 2010 2:02 PM

Both are big match players and very tough competitors...it will be interesting to see who comes on top in the semis..

Posted by: Itchy at April 21, 2010 2:09 PM

Stats are irrelevant in T20 as it comes down to individual bowler vs batsman. I suspect Kumble will be dominant bowler of these two in this match.

Posted by: vikram at April 21, 2010 5:02 PM

It shows everyone has the different skill levels...Bajji might good tricky than kumble...proven too...Lets wish him for his future overs...

Posted by: Kumar at April 21, 2010 6:19 PM

This comparision is not good. You are comparing active player and retired player.

Posted by: Mahesh at April 21, 2010 7:04 PM

Kumble has to leadhis side...and doing disicple bowling. But Bajji,he just give 25 -30runsaway in his over and 1 to 3 wickets make team to win...after all bajji's team enteredfinal..so bajji u r the hero in 2010

Posted by: B S Kumar at April 21, 2010 7:43 PM

LOL @ Shesh! Kumble is a giant only because he is older. Bhajji is a better bowler by miles and a much more useful batsman too! Now, why're we talking about Bhajji being a brat? He can be whatever he wants as long as he performs.
