The final most unpredictable act

Lord's was a flag-waving sea of green and Dil Dil Pakistan rang out once more to celebrate Pakistan's victory in the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup. A Pakistani bus with people hanging off every door, window, and cramming the roof blared its horns outside the home of cricket. What a moment for Pakistan cricket fans and the residents of St John's Wood, NW8.

Pakistan cricket and unpredictability have become bedfellows over the years. At the start of this tournament there was a sense that the bedfellows were falling out of love. Pakistan had become predictable no-hopers. An underwhelming show in the warm-ups was followed by a cold performance against England.

Fans of Pakistan cricket may be pleased to know that unpredictability is back with a vengeance. Not only have Pakistan gone from unconvincing to unbeatable, they also won the final with the cool of habitual winners.

When everybody expected Sri Lankan to rocket away in the first six overs, Pakistan ripped the heart out of their batting. A blow that Kumar Sangakarra recovered from in masterful fashion. Sri Lanka had set themselves 155 plus when they won the toss. After the first six overs, they settled for as many as they could get, which ultimately was not far short of their original target.

It was enough to make Pakistan supporters anxious. The response by Younis Khan's team did little to settle nerves. For the best part of 16 overs it was hard to decipher whether the Pakistan innings was an exercise in immaculate timing or a stumbling chase of a manageable total.

When Shahid Afridi, the man of the match and Pakistan's man of the series, launched Udana for six over midwicket the verdict was a beautifully paced chase. The crowd bayed Afridi's name each time he faced a ball, and their champion--as if making up for years of disappointment--responded by winning the World Cup for Pakistan.

Sri Lanka were heroic today as they have been throughout the tournament. They are cricketers of unusual intelligence and dignity. Their battle to defend a low total was brave and skillful. The two best bowling sides in the tournament went toe to toe, and it was the batsmen of Pakistan who held firm.

Younis Khan followed in the footsteps of his hero Imran Khan and lifted a World Cup for Pakistan. Each intervening year has made this victory sweeter. Younis also followed his hero in two other ways. First, he managed to pull together a disjointed Pakistan team into a world beating unit. Second, he announced his retirement--but only from Twenty20 cricket.

He may as well. How can you beat the drama of this moment? The past years of desperation in Pakistan; isolation in international cricket. No cricket ground you can call home. A nomadic life with sporadic international cricket.

At the end Younis Khan dedicated the victory to Bob Woolmer, his mentor, and to the long-suffering people of his homeland. Whoever scripted this is a genius.

I don't remember when was the last time I had tears in my eyes....I was so excited and so happy that this team has given so much joy to a 16M nation and at a time which couldn't be better than this. Pakistani team played like one Unit, they bowled well and then batted with the same zeal and dedication. This cup was much needed for Pakistan...it was much needed to bring back the smiles on the faces of every Pakistani which were lost for quite some years now.

I am in England but I will hang a Pakistani flag outside my door.

Pakistan Zindabad!

This doesn't make either statistical or cricket sense, it only makes Pathan sense. I think it will take some time for us, Pakistanis, to come down from this "high". We can seriously say no one (even ourselves) gave us a chance, and once again we have astonish the world! Wouldn't be wonderful if we can take this same approach to building nation?

Posted by: raj krishnan at June 21, 2009 7:29 PM

great win. Congrats to Pak players and to all pakistanis. As correctly said, the unpredictableness has again surfaced and that's what was missing in the recent Pak teams. Jai Ho . Good luck to all . It time to enjoy this moment.
best wishes for the future games.

this victory is the answer to all the critics who alwayz find something to accuse Pakistan CRICKET.
And we finally turned our fate our way this time.Other wise LORD's have very bad memories of ours.the 1999 world cup loss and the triangular series loss against australia.and AFRIDI will be new captain of T20;).He deserves it and this is the time that we should make a move.now there is no turning back.Time to let the world know that YES THIS IS PAKISTAN:)!

Now, we are confident that Pakistan can win the rather precious cricket world cup in 2007. It would have been great, as IK has recently suggested, that, this world be swaped by 2015 world cup. A sensible demand but Indian cricket board is unwilling for any compromise.

I think, international cricket community should step in to make this swap happened. If countries like Australia, England, South Africa back IK's suggestion, this swap ca happen. Which is after all for cricket.

Alhumdulillah, we have won. Well done team pakistan---A through professional eam effort. The pain of 99 Lords and 2007 Johansberg is healed. Now we have to settle only few scores of WC against india. This is quite fitting to dedicate it to influential woolmer and the sufering people from US puppit's terrorism in pakistan. Thanks younis, malik, Afridi, Gul,razzaq, Akmal, Ajmal, Aamir, Misbah, Fawad, Shahzaib, Fawad all team pakistan....Thanks Coach aalam, Aaqib and trainer Dyson---Thanks woolmer and Lawson... i enjoyed with 2000 people in one small town, 'basti Lalarukh' in wah cantt. The guys are still celebratig with drums, horns, national songs, cars, it is everything. it is heartening to see the pleasure on the faces. Pakistan is proud of our heros, the best ambassadors of pakistan. a message to world, we are not terorists, we are sports loving...all attemts to make us isolate are not successful. The IPL and champions league without pakistan (two times finalist) looks a circus now.

The BCCI politicised the game, the ICC twisted our arm and the whole world played and perfected the art of T20 cricket. Meanwhile, we sat at home, eventually sent 11 guys on a plane and became WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!
Rationalize that!
and lastly, to hell with the champions league!!

God Bless Pakistan!!!

we had won the match more comfortably if we hadnt let srilankans build a partnership, i think we got relaxed after 6th wicket in 70 runs, excellently played guys.Never mind, the end result is what to be cheerful and proud of, you all have made pakistan and pakistani nation proud

what an inspiring performance. it gave our country reason to smile and a reason to believe --"yes we can" as President Obama reverbated; i think pakistan can draw inspiration from this, put aside their difference and work towards a more beautiful and peaceful pakistan. These boys showed what courage and determination can bring them -- the world at their feet-- enjoy boys, you deserve all the awards/accolades. I think afridi or gul should've been player of the tournament b/c both had been great throughout the tournament. And for those who said Pakistan victories were flukes, what do you say to pakistan ending two of the LONGEST winning streaks in 20/20. I can't wait for the Champion's trophy. i hope the boys come back hungrier and make us proud once more... DIL DIL PAKISTAN :)

It was such a sweet nostalgic moment, like the one about 17 years back. We were a group of friends watching the match in a remote town of Saudi Arabia. Cheering every wicket we were taking; cheering every run we were scoring. Like we had done in the Hall Road Hostel of King Edward Medical College at that time. Screaming, yelling and dancing as if we were still kids. We wanted to savour every moment of this happy event. Our team has made us proud. Well played Yunus Khan and co. Also well played Sri Lanka. Someone had to win. In the end, cricket won.

It was a lovely win and a pleasant surprise to see the rebirth of Pakistan as a formidable force in the Cricketing world. May Allah give us more reasons to celebrate and enjoy our team's moments.

Kudos to the Sri Lankans for putting up a fine show. The way they performed in this tournament should put their post-Lahore demons to complete rest.

Congratulation Pakistan, with you the people of Bangladesh are also very happy, the way Pakistan played really outstanding, I was astonished by the commitment of Mohammad Amir that he showed in his first over. He made Dilshan almost paralyzed at the very first delivery. They pressure that Amir created on them, after that Sri Lanka couldn't stand well with bat. But its true Sangakara & Mathew repaired the innings but not enough to defend.

And what great start Pakistan had with bat today, this is for the first time in this tournament, Pakistan did not lose any wicket within the 1st six overs. What great knock by Akmal and Shahzaib. Afridi is awesome, he is the best. We’ve got a class “fifty” & a partnership of Afridi & Malik.

It was a total team effort, Gul is one of the best bowler in the world. Younus Khan is a cool guy, all the players done so well. Legends always maintain a minimum position which Pakistan is maintaining in T20 cricket; they played both the final of 2007 & 2009

This win mean A LOT to all pakistanis, whats going on in pakistan for past few years only brought diappointment, fear, violance & shame to us. we DESPERATELY needed a good news & it was kinda finding a needle in the hay. However, our cricket team did it and they did it in a great fashion.

today the indians and ICC will be jealous of pakistan's victory, but unlike past final we dont even want to think about indians and india, and their IPL. i wanna say IPL is all about money, today ICC is a servant of indian cricket board, but i wanna say, its not money and its not the tons and tons of praise gathering before the event, its not about the non stop praise for indian team comming from all aspects of cricket world be it a cricket journalist, cricket analysts and etc etc etc, its not the IPL that makes the team glorified, but its the heart, its the passion, its the spirit and most of all, its the natural talent that makes the team and the nation glorified.

message to all those who wanted pakistan to be isolated, who wanted pakistan to be bad named, and eventually out of ICC and treated like slaves, here's a big slap to those people, who say pakistan cricket is second. Pakistan cricket has proved it is second to none in this world, we have done what nobody expected!!!!

Posted by: Rupin at June 21, 2009 8:00 PM

Well done! A final between the two best sides. Pakistan do know how to play T20 cricket as they have reached both World Cup finals so far. For all the hate messages that are bound to be posted here soon, let me make it clear that this is still just a game. Enjoy it for what it is and the skill of the players involved. The best team won and that's it. India and Australia were never the best sides and neither was South Africa for all its victories. They lost when it mattered and that shouldn't take anything away from Pakistan. Congratulations Pakistan, and well played Sri Lanka! Asian cricket is where the real excitement, talent and unpredictability are.

Being a Pakistani fan I was so much pleased to see my team getting home and seeing planning combined with art and aggression. It was hard to believe BOOM BOOM AFRIDI playing such a sensible inning, I wish he may keep doing like this. At the end congratulations to whole Pakistani nation for this win. For my Srilankan fellows your team really fought well but at the end someone has to lose or win, I wish you best of luck for near future.

PAKISTAN ZINDABAD

They can ban us from the IPL, they can steal our cricketers to the ICL, they can refuse to play us, they can do what the hell they like.

Pakistani's will always come through.

We are the Champions

Posted by: wahaj at June 21, 2009 8:05 PM

well said kamran abbasi. at last we have some thing to celebrate. and winning title after a long time will give pakistani team a lot of hopes. pakistani players were not allowed to play IPL, but in the end it has proved good for us as indian players may have earned a lot of money but they lost 3 consecutive games in super, which tells us that money is not the only thing in cricket to look at.
after this victory pakistan should come back with muhammad yousaf, imran nazir and rana naveed. by including these players we can really be at top of test and ODIs as well.

Salaam.cöngrats lots n lots of congrat 2 each n evry1 member of pakistani team n all the pakistani living anywhere in the world.YES, we r THE CHAMPIONS.
Pak can beat any team in the world n i believe in this.beside dis big win we must learn 4rm our mistakes as well.when fast bowlers were doing vry well sply razak then younus didnt give him his 4th over?2ndly who told 2 Gul not 2 bowl yorkers where he is best?2day i thought he was feelng the pressure of the big match despit bowlng so gud in the much tensed match against hot favrt.
I want 2 wish pak best of luck 4 series against SL wich is coming soon.
Aussies won 99 WC FINAL afterwords they were just undeaftable.pak lost n thy were just out.in 07 they again lost 2 ind n ind just became a force in cricket.they achiev wich other indians teams just dreamed abt.
I pointd this bcz i want 2 c pak a realy gud team other big task is champions trophy n WC is also nt 2 far.we must improv in som areas n show n hav d unity in our team.so best of luck 2 pak team 4 comin years.thnx 4 such a gud gift n all the hapines n joy u hv given to whole nation.gr8 work.

I do agree with Kamran bhai that unpredictability finally got pakistan home in the finals against Sri Lanka. This clinical performance against the mature and profession sri lankan outfit really shows the character fo this talented bunch of pakistan players. Afridi has yet again proved that if he will follow some method in his batting, he can turn out to be a real master blaster. Proper game plan was apparent right from the first delivery against T Dilshan and it really paid dividends at the end of the match. Razzaqs return has certainly added much needed strength to this batting order, now afridi should be used top of the order in Coming ODI'S. Younis khan led the side with utmost maturity and skill, opening combination needs to be settled for the future. However, this side has all the gutts to surprise any side of the World, provided they will play with the aggression and skill as they showed today. May God Bless pakistani cricket.

Posted by: jilani at June 21, 2009 8:07 PM

Alhamdulillah, I cannot still believe that it actually happened.

Let us not forget Abdul Razzaq who took 3 wickets. Afridi got a 50 but Razzaq was the first to deflate the balloon.

Long live Pakistan Cricket. Pakistan Zindabad.

Here's the score:

India 1
Pakistan 1

Just the slight twist, that Pakistan is the only team that reached the semi-final stage of both the World Cups (2007 and 2009) ... oh, in our case final too ;) so the real score actually is 2-1!

The banner someone had up at Trent Bridge (and today as well) said it all for me: "Are you watching, India?"

Lastly, a few questions to my friends who blog here: Where is that Champions League happening now without the actual T20 champions? (including just a bunch of losers) ... How much in IPL3's bidding for Afridi? Gul? Ajmal? Akmal? Razzaq? Aamir? ... oh, wait they might not want to travel across!

Congratulations Pakistan!!!

What a match and what a performance! We are all proud of our team and proud to be Pakistani! Starting from Aamer and Razzaq in bowling, to Akmal, Malik and (of course) Afridi in batting, the men in gree were amazing.
My warmest regards to Srilanka as well. If we were not in the finals, we would have supported them instead.

In the end I would say these old timeless words: PAKISTAN ZINDABAD!

Posted by: For_Real at June 21, 2009 8:10 PM

Once again, it was proved that the 20-20 cricket is not about experience or talent, there has to be the burning desire to win - congratulations to Pakistan from your neighbor!

I am not sure these are the words of a so called cricket expert: "For the best part of 16 overs it was hard to decipher whether the Pakistan innings was an exercise in immaculate timing or a stumbling chase of a manageable total." Even without the benefit of hindsight, anyone with an intelligence of a dead mouse could see what was going on. They kept collecting run without panicking, and the asking rate never climbed in two digits as far as I remember.

This is indeed one of the greatest moments in Pakistan & Pakistan cricket's history. It's 4 am, I have work in the morning but don't think the excitement will let me sleep tonight. For Terrorism, poverty, inflation and the myriad of problems which face Pakistan, the sport of cricket provides liberation to the common man and today Younis Khan & his team have brought joy and smiles to the faces of those whose homes have been destroyed and who are forced to live in tents, to those who have prayed for this moment for many years and to every expat Pakistani. I have hugged so many fellow Pakistanis after the victory whom I don't even know..this is what this victory means..it unites us as one and after the Lahore fiasco, it has shown the world that Pakistan cannot be isolated from the cricket world. I think Pakisan should press their case to have their World Cup 2011 matches played in Dubai or UK..Long Live Pakistan and may we bring many more trophies back home.Ameen!PAKISTAN ZINDABAD!!!!!!!!!

And when no one gave us a chance, we are the CHAMPIONS of the WORLD. Mercurial, enigmatic, unblieveable. Can anyone else win like this? What a performance. The match was won in the powerplay of each innings. I admit having doubts after losing the toss, fortunately proven wrong. M Aamer's opening spell was a relevation, reminiscent of Akram and put the Dilshans in there rightful place. SL did not have the class opening bat to face upto quality new ball pace. And the way Akmal played Mathews first over with a straight bat, no gap b/w pad and bat was refreshing. His strokes were clean and had intent. If your opening bowlers and batsmen give you this kind of start you can not lose- simple as that. I think Sangakarra is wrong in claiming the strongest bowling attack. Come on Murali is past his best in limited overs, Mendis can easily be hit as we saw and the only good bowler they had today was Malinga (handled well by Pak). To all PAKISTANIS anywhere in the world, hold your heads high.

As a English supporter I like this Pakistani team! I went to the super 8 match at Lords between Pakistan and Sri Lanka and thought that I would be supporting Sri Lanka. I came away supporting Pakistan! I don’t know why. There was just something about the team. The way they seemed to get on together, the way they reacted to the public that were watching their training sessions before the game. The general way the deported themselves. The public utterances of their super captain Younis Khan. I just warmed towards them. Remember then they were no hopers who had previously lost to England and on that day lost to Sri Lanka. But there was just something about them. Then all of a sudden , during the past week they started playing fabulous cricket and won the lot!
So well done, good luck and come back soon.

While Pakistan's triumph today closely resembles that of the 1992 World Cup winning team, the joy I feel today closely resembles another event 35 years ago when the great Muhammad Ali against all odds and predictions, defeated the mighty and invincible George Foreman. This victory is a welcome boon for the people of Pakistan

10 years ago, Pakistan lost to Australia by 8 wickets on Sunday June 20 at Lords, in the 1999 World Cup. Today, in a different format of cricket, Pakistan on Sunday June 21, 2009 have managed to win the Cup by an identical margin. So congratulations to Younus Khan and his team. After Imran Khan,he is the first successful Pakistani captain who did not have Imran Khan as a mentor. Inzi, Wasim, Waqar, Saleem etc. all had a chance to learn from Imran.

To the Sri Lankan fans, I salute your great team. I have nothing but respect for the accomplishments of your players. I envy you for having such great players of class like Jayawardene and Sangakkara in your team.

Hats off Pakistan! You have made millions of Pakistanis around the world so proud!

Posted by: Abbas Ali at June 21, 2009 8:19 PM

Cool down dude-does it change anything still???No one doubted Pakistan as team so nothings new yet.The things that still remain fixed are whether we can play cricket at home? Will our nation stop playing double game with terrorists! No yet.We have lot of mess to clean and then talk.Let not our cricket chiefs who talk before thinking create another mess with media. What the nation values for its future is what cricket will face in future.Gates are still closed as we cannot deal with terrorists first!!Unless as someone said nation is different from cricket team.Or we let terrorists shoot us.The shame is still written on our faces. This does not make Austrailia or Srilanka tour us-does it? Does it make us invited anywhere? Doubt that.

We also undestood your sorrows, frustrations, anger and the isolation you have suffered. This is your victory against all odds. THIS WAS NO FLUKE,NOR DID THE OPPOSITION CHOKE AS SOME PREJUDICED PEOPLE OF OTHER COUNTRIES PERCEIVE . It was the sheer brilliance, talent and instincts of AFRIDI,GUL,AJMAL,AKMAL,RAZZAQ,AMIR,MALIK,ALAM,SHAHZAIB and the mature presence of YK and MISBAH. What a win! Absolutely delightful. Pakistan has proven to the world that they're a cricket powerhouse and it's the best gift they could have gotten at this time of distress. These guys hadn't much of TT in the last yeat but still did wonders. This is news for me that Younis has announced his retirement from Twenty20, I saw the ceremony and I think all he said was something that now he can retire without regret when he wants, but I may be wrong. I think he should stay longer as even the TT team needs him. He's scoring at a strike rate of almost 140, what more can we ask from him. Afridi was sensational and so was the rest of the team especially Razzaq and Akmal. I sincerely hope and pray that this World Cup victory is the harbinger of many, many good things for Pakistan that will make our beloved nation even stronger and greater. Pakistan Zindabad.

Lalit Modi, you prevented our players (even our umpires) play in IPL and Champions League but you failed to stop the real talent snatching the world cup.

So do you still consider Pak players worth nothing and the likes of Sharma, Raina & Ishant wortth more than Afridi, Akmal & Gul ??

Please arrange two IPL every year and practice as much as you can before turning up again for the next T20 world cup. This will improve your chances to get at least to semi final !!!

Great game and above all a clinical performance by the Men in Green! Its a day for our nation to be proud of and the spirits of our nation is being lifted surely by these elven great players not forgetting the One and only LALA AFRIDI. Today he has showed what big players can do in times like these. He made a statement that if he can do it all today he will and he has sure has kept his word. Special praise to Mohd Aamir and to Razaq to put up a real performance at the begining of the innings and last but not the least the short but full of talent Kamran Akmal who has shown he can lead our attack in big games. Overall great team work, excellent planning against Dilshan and Jayawardene so congrats to the think tank behind this. In the end a message for Karan Sing: My dear friend never challange the heart of a champion NEVER! Am sure you will accept now that our gully cricket sure is better than what you call the Baby Blues.
Kamran keep on writing those great blogs my friend

True so very true. You couldn't have phrased it better. Indeed Afridi has made amends up for all the disappointments.
BUT we cannot forget Umer Gul and Saeed Ajmal. Those two men are as much responsible for this great day of joy as Afridi. Our president unfortunately has announced such a small token of appreciation for a group of men who have brought such joy to this nation of 17 million in this time of depression as if he has to give it from his personal deep pockets. Such a pitty.

Credit goes to the entire team for playing as a unit and with nothing less than victory in mind. No matter which player rose to the occasion in a given game, full credit goes to the leader Younus Khan. For the last four games Younus has been announcing in each press conference after the match that he will win the Trophy. He was never in doubt, he believed in his men from day one. Their were no individual prides but unity as a team. This was the greatest achievement of Younus Khan, who brought the shattered team together and put them as a unit. Congratulations goes to the entire Nation and the fans all around the world, lets hope it is the start of a new beginning in Pakistan Cricket and I hope it goes on for ever. Thank you Younus for the Trophy.

Its great to see so many happy faces out there on the roads of Karchi. Thank You Team Pakistan. Wish we can repeat this performance in upcoming Champions trophy. What makes this win special is that almost all other teams had players who featured in IPL and were in 20 20 practice except for Pakistan players who only had limited recent exposure of 20 20 and that also against each other in the RBS 20 20. Our middle order in one day cricket needs to be strenghthen and hopefully Yousuf will make into the Champions trophy squad to fill in the gaps. I am surprised the way Afridi did his batting in the last two matches. Something very rare. When malinga was targeting him with bouncers, i feared for a short that Afridi will fly into rage and lose his wicket in the process. To my amazement, nothing happened like this, when Afridi surprised the whole world with his calm and well directed batting. For the first time i saw him caring for his wicket and adapting himself to the situation. Guys we have found a NEW AFRIDI, but we need him not to change and remain like this. If he does so, i think very soon he will be counted as among the best in the business.
Thanks.

It was great to see Pakistan happy. We desperately needed it. After all that is happening in the country, this has been great for the nation. And it was equally was great to see younas wrapped in Pak. flag. It was great to see Afridi play intelligently. It was great that the team remembers Bob and dedicated the cup to him.

God bless you Pakistan.

thats was a great win guys. Afridi really did well and i hope this will be a new era for pakistan cricket. However, do you think it was the right descion for Younus to retire?

Posted by: Nadeem Saif at June 21, 2009 8:38 PM

They say Cricket is by chance. What happened today was more than a chance and may be just short of a miracle. A team with semi fit players, most of the batsmen struggling to middle the ball throughout the series, captain struggling to put his bowlers in right order and fielders in the right places, fielder struggling to hold on to the catches and yet a nation fully behind her boys and a common belief that despite all of our flaws all we need to do is to stand up to our opponent for those 40 overs. This indeed was the triumph of spirit of a nation. The difference was that every team in this tournament wanted it but Pakistanis needed it. It reminds the old story where a small chihuahua jumped over a 12 foot fence to save its life from a large hound. Looking at this a father told his son,"You know the chihuahua jumped over the fence not because he could do it. He did it because he had to." And today Pakistanis have done the impossible not because they could do it but because they had to.

Hats off to the rest of the gang and specially the openers to give us a good start and keeping the run rate up there!. Unpredictable as it has always been but now there are also hopes attached!! Great Game guys. Let's get the rest of the year under our belt also!

BOHT BOHT MUBARAK HO APKO AUR SUBH PAKSITANI KO

I WAS CRYING WHEN YOUNIS HOLD THE TROPHY. IT WAS THE MOMENT WE NEED SO BADLY AFTER A LONG WAIT FROMM 1992 TO 2009. ONCE AGAIN WE PROVE THAT WE CAN BEAT ANY TEAM IN THE WORLD. ONCE AGAIN WE UNITED AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE SOME THING TO JOY, WE HAVE SOME THING TO PROUD. BUT ALSO WELL DONE SIRILANKAN. THEY ARE SIMPLY MARVELLOUS TEAM FULL MARKS TO THEM BUT TODAY WE ARE THE BEST.

THANK GOD FOR GIVING US SUCH A MOMENT IN OUR LIVES.

GOD BLESS PAKISTAN

Wonderful article Kamran. Wonderful win for Pakistan. They are by far the most exciting team to watch when they are on song, and no other team has that element of sheer excitement, adventure, and rebelliousness that they sometimes show. This win is a wonderful achievement and hopefully will take them to a good run in future cricket. I am sad to see Younis retire, as I feel that the side really got united under his captaincy. I hope he reconsiders his decision, as he did a fantastic job rallying his team, and also leading from the front, with his performance and attitude. Congratulations Pakistan, you make us proud. Pakistan, Paindabad.

what an inspiring performance. it gave our country reason to smile and a reason to believe --"yes we can" as President Obama reverbated; i think pakistan can draw inspiration from this, put aside their difference and work towards a more beautiful and peaceful pakistan.

My commiserations to the Srilankans cuz they deserved it more than any other team, for they had shown performance and consistency, with simplicity, humbleness and respect.
And thats two middle fingers to the terrorist of Lahore.. No matter what you do we will not succumb to you atrocities.. One ground or another, we will play our game, bring smiles on millions of faces, live through our fans and keep the game alive.. for Cricket cannot be terrorized, its immortal and invincible

Congrats to all Pakistan people, where ever you are, and thanks to critics, It all about the mental toughness, and truly team efforts. Its new life for cricket in Pakistan. Now we can also say that we are the best team unforunatly we lose in 2007 W/C final, its was not a fluke, Its a determination & We are the better team all in all. What a way Afidi come back & Malik, Akmal, Razzak did the splended job for there team. Now Younis Khan can say that, we are enjoyed W/C with the Cup in hand. Man of the Match should be given equally Razzak & Afridi. After razzak enterence, whole team senario were changed. Keep going like this guys champians tropy also waiting for you dear. I saw Indian News Chennal, they are also appriciating us, its a good sign for both country, Sure can say next world cup in 2011 will won by any of our Asian Teams.
This win should also dedicate to all badly effective people in Pakistan in terriest attacks.

Younis was a marvelous captain in this tournament. What he did best was to take the pressure of the players because Pakistan never play well under pressure. It is a wise decision to quit 20 20 and Shoaib Malik should also follow his foot steps. T20 is really a game of aggression more than class. Well done team Pakistan and especially Younis Khan.

Posted by: saveed at June 21, 2009 8:48 PM

HOW WAZ THAT!
Afridi: for all the years of hurt, and stupidity, you have recovered yourself well.
Razzaq: You once had the potential to be the next Jaques Kallis, now you can begin that quest again, well played and welcome back boy.
Younis: You batted well, and lead well. and I agree, dedication to Bob woolmer was fitting.
Akmal: Well played, sensible, and you caught most catches.
Gul: Keep it up brother! If you keep going, you can be an example to a generation let down by the horrific examples of Akhter and Asif.
Ajmal: What a way to play in your first T20 tournament - well bowled son.
Hasan: filled the big shoes of an opener, may not be as good as Butt, however you took your chance and contributed.
Aamer: You have learnt much. Follow the example of Gul and you two will enjoy playing together.
Intikhab alam: Gr8 coaching record!
PCB: This is not your victory, this is the players' only.
BOB Woolmer Resting In Peace - this is for you.
Pakistani's: You can change yourselves!

Reading every line of this blog was overwhelmingly emotional. Well written. Two things to highlight: 1. Afridi making up for the past many years, 2. Younis retiring at the right time from t20, has brought the team together.
Now, what does Mr. Qadir think of Younis? The Almighty Lord has his own ways! Pakistan Zindabad. Welcome home boys!!

Posted by: U. Khalid at June 21, 2009 8:51 PM

Congratulations Mr. Abbasi! A script by a genius indeed. The enrapturing performance exhibited today has surely resurrected the spirit of the game in Pakistan and the wider sub-continent. It was good to see the team coming together as a unit, and achieving tactical supremacy.

I do not agree with Younis Khan's retirement, but I suspect it's more to do with emotions tangled with the win than actual reason. Age has nothing to do with T20 cricket, as can be deduced by terrific shows by retired cricketers in the IPL. No matter, this will pave the way and provide leading opportunities for the likes of Afridi himself, young Akmal or Misbah.

Hats of to you Kamran, for keeping us motivated and inspiring the never say die spirit through your articles. Congratulations to the Pakistan team once again, for capturing our hearts with an outstanding performance. Pakistan Zindabad!

From nowhere to the top. This is Pakistani cricket. They won when they had to win. By beating two unbeaten sides of the tournament they mirrored the matches against New Zealand in 1992.

Everyone chipped in with his role and brought the trophy home. No comments on Younis Khan.

Posted by: Faraaz at June 21, 2009 8:56 PM

What a incredible show of resurgence from pakistan not just once but twice.92 worldcup was something that i cherish even now and will keep remembering it as long as i live and now this incredible day of my life.this time especially cuz there wasnt any signs of pakistan doing anything great in this tournament oh i forgot there wasnt anything going great for pakistan in 92 as well.Today pakistan was like any great team u could compare them with, calm, cool, composed and i would say rather clinical in their finish i mean there was no big drama everything was under control through out the match.really a great performance.
Younus khan's was nothing short of imran khan's spectacular captaincy in 92.after he has retired i think Shahid Afridi should be made a captain for t20,i think he has matured enough to bat through when it matters most and with his accurate bowling and fielding he commands respect from his team mates.Bear in mind he is already a captain of karachi's t20 team.

Afridi boom boom is back!!!! what an awesome series of performances in the past few games he has given us...simply awesome and i hope this now gives him much more confidence...make Afridi ODI and 20/20 captain please.
The inclusion of Razzaq is something not to be ignored either...he came in at a crucial time against the NZ and today he took very 3 vital wickets for us that SL couldnt recover from.

Lets hope that this massive victory gives us Pakistani's something to cheer about for the next few yrs and also for the people who are suffering back home.

It was great to watch Pakistan lifting a world cup after 17 yrs. I am an Indian muslim but have always supported Pakistani cricket team even when they played against India. I have felt both sadness & Joy same as a pakistani cricket fan whenever Pakistan has lost or won a game. It is because no team has the equal guts as Pakistani team to come harder on opposition when everyone give away hopes on them. Shahid Afridi proved his class on such a big stage, no worries it has come late but at perfect time. No team needed this cup as badly as Pakistan. It is slap a on the faces of ICC, BCCI and all other international teams who wants to isolate Pakistan cricket. They proved that no team can provide the thrills & talents which this Pakistan team has. Its also a victory for millions of youngsters who has dreams of playing for Pakistan, an ease of pain for thousands of innocent people who lost their homes and a moment of joy to every pakistani in trouble times... Dil dil Pakistan!!!

Posted by: cricipolitics at June 21, 2009 9:00 PM

I strongly disagree to call this the "Final most unpredictable act". The unpredictability is being attached to the Pak team way too many times. How could this be unpredictable when the same team had played the last T20 final. If this was unpredicatable then was India's vistory in the last T20 or their early exit in this T20 predictable? Was Australia's exit in the very first round predictable? Was South Africa's compreshensive lost in the Semi's predictable? For me the only thing that was predictable after the first couple of shocks was Pakistan's win. In my opinion the most favorite teams have shown the most unpredicatability in this format of the cricket. One just need to look at the win loss ratio of the Pak T20 team. They are the most consistent and predictable ones. The facts tell the whole story.

Pakistan's win today in the T20 World Cup is perhaps the best thing which could have happened. Pakistan Cricket Team for all its inconsistencies and drama still continues to throw some brilliant players. I stay in London and after the match when I went to a park near my house it was full of Pakistani kids playing Cricket. They had brought out their Cricket kits which were gathering dust for a long time. This victory has put smiles back on their faces.

What a moment, never thought that we would live to see this. Just goes on to tell the world that we as a nation and a cricket team is NOT a push away. The comparision to 1992 are not overstated, even though this is a shorten version of the game. Much more than in 1992, the nation needed this victory today and the team combination did it for Pakistan. Akram stole my words when he said that this is a tribute to the brave Pakistan Army. And brave is the Pakistan Cricket team to seal this moment from us.Falicitations to Sanagakara boys as well, who came out of the Lahore attacks and played such gallantly throughout the tournaments, it was an ironic way that Pakistan apologised for what happened in March by handing them a defeat in a worldcup final. This to me is the victory of spirit, spirit of the game, spirit of Pakistan cricket and spirit of Pakistan Nation.

Posted by: S R at June 21, 2009 9:06 PM

I would be most painful for Lalit Moodi to see Pakistan win as he thought he had laid Pakistani Cricket to grave by throwing them out of IPL. Lalit "Papoo" if cricket was played by cheerleaders, big digital screens, propaganda and making filmi faces and photoshoots , India would have been handed the trophy even before starting the World Cup.

Stand up to the Champions.

We are fourth generation South Africans and would like to comment on the humility that the Pakistani players displayed. The lump in Afridi's throat in thanking THE ALMIGHTY and Akmals mentioning of dua for his nation was a reminder for us to not forget our purpose in life. Their words reached millions of people and showed what exceptional ambassadors they were of Pakistan. The Pakistan team had conducted itself with respect and dignity throughout this tournament... and they have reaped success and reward for their efforts. I just wonder how those jealous critics who suffer from blind prejudice are feeling at this moment? Pakistan dealt with the minnows first, then the big guns. LIVE WITH IT!

Wonderfull feelings, what a joyfull evening it was for all pakistani supporters. Congrats Kamran bhai. As I enjoy the results I want to praise the SL team for the quality of cricket they brought to this tournament specially Dilshan & Malinga both are the super stars of this compition.
To comment the match, I just disagree with so many who think the victory is due to one man show. I was hearing to some comments by Sanjey Manjrekar saying unpredictabilty is done off by afridis extraordinary performances in semis and finals. I think he is totally wrong. I would like to ask him what he thinks about Aamers first over and how good was he to execute the plan for Dilshan, What about Razaqs, ajmal and Guls bowling. What he thinks about Kamran, shoaibs batting in final and yes youni's aoverall performance with averaging 56 at strike rate of 140. It was a total team performance in all the matches since that NZ day. If Imran Nazir comes in for shahzaib, I will call pakistan the perfect team.

Brilliant win for Pakistan and an all out team effort - this is most certainly the best win we've seen in ages. A lot of hard work on Afridi's part to perform from the front and give his 200% to this team. Younis Khan did well in the end and I must say some of the hard work was also done by Mr. Inthikhab Alam who was also the coach in 1992 when Pakistan won the 50/50 World Cup. There's no limit when it comes to us Pakistanis taking life seriously and this should help us put many things right back home and abroad. InshAllah and congrats to you Mr. Kamran, all blog readers and to all the beautiful people of this nation! :)

It was an emotional moment here in Pakistan, the time Afridi got the winning run, I saw happiness all around the city of Karachi. And it was joy and cheer and around the country. We will not forget this moment ever. When Afridi was facing Udana and 16 runs were required of 13 balls, I stand and said to my friends and family, "this is the moment" and the next ball goes for six. Thanks to Allah and Thanks to our green team :)
We are the champions of the world now..

great job well written,

this was very very desperately needed.

i dont want to sound very impatient, but i want another real 50 over worldcup in Pakistan's shelf.

its nice to have this t20 wcup in these tough times though but lets see how Pakistan looks in 2011. Inshallah Younis would morph this side into something great.

Posted by: Shahid at June 21, 2009 9:50 PM

Pakistan is the only team who played Mendis and Murali perfectly in both the matches. If you bring Imran Nazir in and have Sohail Tanvir (in his usual form), Asif, Rana in reserves who dares compare any other team player by player to Pakistan. We are not here with the cup due to luck or one man show, as we featured in both the finals of T20i world cups. We on papir have a better team than SL and India - player to player.
And at the end of my comment I would now say to the IPL organisers, can you not see now how poor your IPL is without the world beaters, unless you think the glamour is only in inclusion of white players even if they are from third ranked list of players from Australia.

Even though I am not a Pakistani, I cheered this team to lift the trophy simply because the world needs Pakistan cricket and cricketers. The ICC needs to keep this in mind and ensure Pakistan gets adequate games against every nation. Congratulations Pakistan ! You deserve this victory.

Its Time to discard Kaneria from Test team and include Afridi and Ajmal to pair with Asif and Gul. Afridi took most of his wicket while batsmen tried to play defensively and ajmal is just a class better than Kaneria. Find of Aamer will leave no place for Shoaib Akhtar, Iftekhar anjum, or Sohail Tanvir until one of Gul, Asif and Aamer is injured. Pakistans only problem is opners, Butt, Imran Nazir, Imran Farhat, Jamshid all of same standard

Its a wonderful victory for the people of Pakistan. Certainly one of the finest moment in our history. We are proud of our boys .

Teams have to visit Pakistan in future. Its just a matter of time when this violence will finish. We have a bright future . Just look at the bowling of M. Amir. Doesn't he remind us of Wasim Akram? Pace , Aggressive and very young. .......... So talented we are as a nation

A great performance from Pakistan team. This was a real professional show of cricket. The cornered "TIGERS" again lived up to the expectations. Afridi, temperamentally changed player. Well done Younis but your decision to retire from T20 is not good, we want to see you in all sorts of cricket.
KARAN SINGH is this still a fluke. I am sure you will not post a comment.

I could not be happier right now. Pakistan are ICC T20 World Cup Winners after defeating Sri Lanka. Pakistan needed this win with all the terrible things happening. We must also remember the work late Bob Woolmer did with Afridi, Akmal and Younis. He would be proud of the team in heaven. Jeeway Pakistan!

The cornered tigers have roared again. Starved of cricket for such a protracted period, the most under-cooked - they were mostly written off before a ball was bowled. The defeat to England - well, the least said the better - might as well have been WWF! But the turning point came in the New Zealand match - Gul annhilated them and Afridi's superman catch gave them renewed belief. From that point they didn't look back. Their big match players performed when it mattered most. The bowlers were awesome and Afridi'd batting carried them through. A rejuvenated Afridi. The cheerleader. I would even go as far as to say - Afridi the magician. His kiss to Kallis in the semi-final confirmed that he was back. The final - one knew it was going to be our day when Dilshan was back in the hutch in the first over. What a superb finish. The only disappointment - 11 wickets, THE catch, 170+ runs - Afridi should have deservedly got the nod for the Man of the Tournament. Well done Pak team! Well done!

Posted by: Ahmed at June 21, 2009 10:37 PM

Really happy for Pak. It was an unexpected clinical execution by the entire team. And that Afridi would be the main architect of this run chase is mind boggling. This is what makes Pak still a treat to watch... sometimes. If you are any other team playing against Pak during a big match, the one thing you want to hope for is that they bring everything but their killer instinct to the game. Cause the fact that you were unbeaten during the entire tournament is really just a stat then.

Sri Lanka did play like the true champions they are during the entire tournament. Such a talented & disciplined team that you always have to be on your toes against them.

Posted by: Kris at June 21, 2009 10:41 PM

It pains me to say this as an indian - but well done. on the performance alone in the last 2/3 games pak deserved this win, even though they were probabaly not the best team in the tournament - but such is the irony of tournaments like the WC. But this is all the more poignant for Pak after the events of the last few years and the political troubles back home. I hope this brings a few moments of happiness for some people, especially in the north, who deserve it!

Posted by: EYE OPENER at June 21, 2009 10:41 PM

Posted by: Alex at June 21, 2009 10:59 PM

i had my doubts after the england defeat but the boys pulled through. Well played and fantastic result. Afridi made the difference and the return of Razzaq has been important. Time to dispense with the guys who are obviously not cut out for this format....Salman Butterfingers. Shahziab has done well. Bring back Imran Nazir and Mo Yousuf. Also need a replacemment for Younis Khan. I think next years competition will be a great opportunity to see how the young guns have developed (Amer and Shazaib). Again we all doubted u but as ever the boys came through.

In my opinion younis and afridi becomes the names people won`nt forget for ages but here we are not giving any credit to intikhaab alam..(the same man agian) and bowling coach aaqib for their efforts.
I firmly belive that we dont need palyers like aasif and shoaib now...not even imraan nazir but rana naveed and yousf would be a great addition to current team..Rana `s rev swing ablities and variations are excellent...
anyway good luck for future ..

Posted by: Sitarah Anjum - London at June 21, 2009 11:05 PM

Well done to Pakistan team. This was almost replay of 1992 World cup when they started as underdog but peaked at the right to win the World cup. As a Pakistani fan I did not expect that they would make this far given their current form and lack of cricket. I had low expectations but at the same time I hoped they might do it this time and they did. Afridi looked a totally changed man from semi- final. Sending him to No.3 really paid off. This victory was achieved by gr8 teamwork but Gul, Afridi, Ajmal, Aamir were just magical throughout the tournament. Inclusion of Razzaq pumped up Pakistan and things started working when it mattered most. Younas Khan did very good captaincy specially in the final.
Congratulations to the whole Pakistani nation, die hard supporters all around the world and team Pakistan who made us proud at the time when this Cup brought so many joys for the country stricken by terrorism. Job well done! Pakistan Zindabad!

Afridi was absolutely amazing...i have never been an afridi fan in my life because he was very inconsistent with his bat but in this tournament he has matured a lot and have batted very well specially from the NZ game and forward. Great job pakistan team, you have made us proud. Kudos go to all members of pak team including intikhab alam and aaqib javed who have done an amazing job with this team. This win was immaculate!!!

The way we played the entire match was sublime.

Cool calm confident

But the work has only just begun

They should not see this as the culimnation of a tournament but rather as the dawn of a new era for Pakistan Cricket.

This magnificent launch pad must be used for the maximum benefit to galvanize the team and support for Pakistan Cricket.

There nust not be any complacency or arrogance or relaxation.

The team itself must keep setting much higher goals, targets and standards for itself. They must strive to continually acheive more and more. They must keep looking to improving in all deparmtents (fielding, bowling and batting) and getting better and better in all forms of the game.

The next trophy to come home is in 3 months time (ICC Champions Trophy). Thats the next goal Bring it home boys!

I hope that this will become the opening that people of Pakistan were looking for, the past couple of years have been a real test for the Pakistani nation - finally some good news has arrived, which may - even for a moment or so provide much needed relief, from the sorrows that have surrounded us. As for the doubters, one thing : Start believing and we will do it (insha Allah).

Congrats team Pakistan!
The grace and humbleness exhibited by Pakistan players throughout the tournament as well as at the time of the victory was refreshing since it's very easy to get carried away with all the excitement and adrenaline rush -There was no cockiness!!
Pakistan's T20 victory is an extremely uplifting and heroic story however it's not complete without the essential theatrical elements of drama, the thrill, the suspense and the highs and the lows!!
Perhaps drama is synonymous with Pakistani cricket and hence the clichéd tag of “unpredictability”.
Moral of the story is to "Keep the faith when no one is willing to give you a chance".
I'm so proud of our "men in green"!

Thank You, Younis Khan, and Pakistani team for making us believers again. The picture where Tanvir, Butt, and Alam are sprinting ahead of everyone else to embrace Sir Boom Boom Afridi and Malik sums up the sense of unity and crushes rumors of rifts. Younis, please build on this and make sure this unit stays the same more or less. I believe that players like Imran Nazir and Rana Naved should be recalled as well.
It has been 17 years since 1992, and I must admit teary eyes.
Younis Khan, a perfect time to retire from 20/20 and a wise justified decision indeed.
I also think that Afridi has matured enormously since his debut. One remembered Inzi, famous for scripting run-chases. The calm, and determination were amazing. AND HE BOWLS, FIELDS!
An aggressive captain in T20's is the way to go.

Amazing, breathtaking and confident Lions have done it again. When the odds were against them, when the majority of tv commentators were supporting the other team, they showed the lion's heart and steel nerves they have. The opposition captain could not have the heart and courtesy to praise them, the but streets of London joined the streets of Pakistan to go wild in celebration and thanking the Almighty for this gift. There could not be a better time for a Word Cup Victory for Pakistan. Turning the corners is what Pakistanis do... when it matters most.

11. M.Asif (once his ban is lifted)

This gives us 7 great batsmen:

3 pure classic batsmen
3 hard hitting all rounders
1 hard hitting keeper batsman

It gives us 7 destructive bowlers:

3 pure wicket taking pacers
1 seaming all rounder
1 pure off spinner
3 spin all rounders

Mubarak to all Pakistani supporters. Today we truely played like championsss. The result could have been better. This is a victory for the team, the Nation, the supporters and most importantly the street cricket of Pakistan.

There is a team that was underprepared, that is unpredictably brilliant, that throughs a 17 years old bowler to the biggest stage of cricket, that has a raw talent that wins the heart of the people, a team that plays for people and becomes underdogs and beats the best teamsss. Pakistan Zindabad. The green flag flyyyyyyyyyyyy high

Now bring back Mohammed Yousuf, Imran Nazir, Rana Naveed and Imran Farhad and we will become even stronger in ODIs and Next T20 world cup.

Posted by: Usman Zia at June 22, 2009 12:40 AM

It felt like my heart will stop once the final run was scored. I have never felt like this before, even when we won the 92 cup. This means more than Cricket, i am happy for the whole nation who can enjoy rare moments of joy. Truly professional performance. Afridi should be the 2020 captain and Younus Khan should coach the 2020 team. I was just watching the news and even Salman Ahmed, the Junoon guitarist could not stop his emotions on television interview. He was overwhelmed and cried. Yes this victory means so much to Pakistan and yes someone in the blog said it right "to hell with the champions league". DIL DIL PAKISTAN.. Go Team Pakistan Go Pakistan ! Pakistani Tujhe Salam !!!!!!!!

Posted by: bohurupi at June 22, 2009 12:40 AM

Could anyone bet on Pakistan winning the T20 world cup after their hiccups in the warm matches and a hammering defeat to England? I would rather doubt so. But what a change occured over the course of the game just within the next few days! Since then, Pakistan hardly looked back again. With every game played they became more and formidable. And in the final they just turned out to be at their best. While Afridi played the master allrounder innings in both the semi final and final, we should not forget the contribution of Abdur Razzaq in the final. What a terrific bowling performance he had displayed today! Its actually the "enter Razzaq" sceanario in the Pkistan squad that had changed all the equations towards Pakistan's favor. Above, it was a perfect team effort at te end that drove Pakistan towards in goal. Everyone single had his share. Great cricket.

Well done Pakistan.miracles happen only in this land of the Pures.nobody was ready to give us a chance before the start of this mega event and here today we are the World Champs.it simply defy any logic.
KHAN EFFECT was instrumental in Pakistan's victory.
a NEW Afridi emerged in this WC which is a great news for Pakistan cricket.this new Afridi is mature, responsible and caring.he will make a great Captain after the Great Khan Younis Khan.Pakistan captaincy should now permanently stay with the KHAN DYNASTY.
credit goes to Intikhab Alam as well as he is the most lucky coach for Pak.keep him on this post till he is 100 years old.the most successful Pak coach ever.this WC give us a new star in the shape of M Amir who is the next Wasim Akram.Umer Gul has already become part of the folklore.we regained what we lost on that fateful day of 20 june 1999.from here onward sky is the limit.my prediction is that Pak is going to be the 2011 WC Champion as well.Pakistan Zindabad

I support Indian team and I rooted for Pakistan team to loose in initial matches.

But I surprised myself like some other Indians I know(who are either ambivalent or grudginly supported your team in later stages), when I found myself hoping Pakistan won this one.

So congratulations, specially given what it means for the fans at this time.

As for the team's performance - imaging the distractions with everything that's happening back home. And to come out of the tournament as the champions - just awesome. Hats off to the players and the coaches. You have done us proud.

I am from Canada for the last 13 years and watching pakistani cricket to down and down under dirty poilitics but todays victory is just unebeliavable and sweet at the same time.. After so many years of disappointments, i didnt expect Pakistan to move even to super 8, let alone winning all the way. Yet i was hoping for a miracle to happen. Thats just amazing to see pak winning and I really relived the victory of 1996. Well done Paksitani team and I really salute Afridi for turning his game around and batting sensibly, so unlike of him but so sweet in the end. I hope this winning trend continues, well beyong todays victory.

It was coach Intikhabs 2nd World cup victory. What an achievement? While watching the semi & final, I was counting several key factors for this resusgence.a.A good blend of newcomers and experenced made this wonderful combination.b.good coaching and brave captaincy.c.emergence of Aameer as a very good left arm pace bowler and shazaib as opening attacker.d.Team spirit e.Goos selection ,Pl.bring back Abdul Qadir,ex-chief selector who was responsible for initial selection but had to resign after poor start of the team.

Posted by: Fawad Khan at June 22, 2009 2:57 AM

It is not just the fact that they won it but how they won it. The way they got Amir to bowl at Dilashan was shear genius. It was all planned and worked out. The calm that I saw on Afridis face was when there were 30 something runs neede in 20 balls was absolutely amazing. I saw humilty in Afridi and Younus. Everything was controlled and and precise. Even the sprint in the end of the players towards the center was choreographed. They may not have spoken perfect english but this is the most cultured, intellegent and stable Pakistani tean that I have ever seen. Long Live Pakistan and Younus.

Brilliant win as only Pakistan can produce. One of the sweetest victories ever and one our nation so badly needs. Hopefully, the fact that 3 Pathans were instrumental in winning this will help us all realize that our strength will only come from being a united people and nation. Together we must overcome this miltant menace as well. Pakistan cricket overcame a lot of adversity to win today, Pakistan needs more of the same.

Congratulations to Pakistan and all Pakistanis from an Indian-born Australian! Truly inspiring stuff that will hopefully continue for many years.

Hats off to Sri Lanka as well. Worthy opponents on the day and a fantastic team. Also hats off to the ICC, who showed that with a little common sense, you can turn an event world class if you remember that cricket is about appeasing the fans, not the sponsors and the money makers.

All in all, a great tournament. Now, if only Australia could learn how to play it...

#Risin' up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the cream of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all in the eye of the tiger

Risin' up, straight to the top
Have the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive.#

/* Lalit Modi, you prevented our players (even our umpires) play in IPL and Champions League but you failed to stop the real talent snatching the world cup.*/

Its the Pakistan Government which prevented the Pak players from playing in India due to "security concerns". By the time the tournament was shifted to RSA, most of the franchisees had made replacements for their Pakistani players. That is why they were not allowed.

Cheers!!

Congratulations Pakistan !

I am of Indian descent but I first learned to play cricket through my uncle who is a Pakistani. He's not my relative but only a family friend yet so close to my heart. He lives in Karachi now. I hope this victory brings joy to him as much as it does to me. World cricket is incomplete without Pakistan's contribution. ICC please make sure Pakistan team plays more games. Lalit Modi, please throw away your ego and let Pakistani players play in next IPL season. They are an asset and never a liability.

Frankly speaking I was holding back my emotions since the semi final against the SA as I had seen many shocking defeats suffered by Pakistan that I kept praying but did not write the comments in the blogs since, I had in mind that I would write only after Pakistan wins and here we are the T20 world champs. Congrats to all Team and the whole nation and many thanks to Mr. Aziz South African for writing so vehemently in favor of Pakistan, I had read your earlier comments after the semi final win against SA when You wrote and predicted Pak Victory and today's comments as well. Thanks all the fanatic supporters of PAKISTAN for joyful expression of feelings. When i was watching here in Hong Kong on Internet the whole bunch of my friends who could not watch kept calling me to know the details of every moment of the game until the end of the game and I saw the emotions of Pakistani public on Samaa news Tv till late in the night, they were delirious and finally had a broad smile on their faces.

I must first say well done to the team. Incredible. BUT, I cannot help but recall that a mere 2 weeks ago this same post did nothing more than to humiliate and degrade the pakistani team, and pakistan as a nation. I think it is utterly despicable to be with the team in good moments, and then to abandon it when it is through tough times. I live in Australia, yet not a single australian i met uttered a foul word against their own team, despite it being knocked out in the preliminary stages. Pakistan, Unpredictable? that is just a tag. Afridi practicing his bowling for the past 2/3 yrs and now performing isnt unpredictable. Younis leading from the front, as he has done in the past, isnt unpredictable. Journalists r there to just sensationalise

Revisiting 1992 WC final and 2009 T20 final recollcts some old memories.Wasim Akram reappeared in the form of Aameer,Aqiv javed in the form of Umar gul. What a splendid win? When wasim termed Pakis as dark horse and possible winner,People loughed at him.Now Look the cricket world what a cornered Pakis can produce. While all the best coaches of the globe assembled in INdia in 2008 IPL to train Indian boys,I thought that henceforth,India would be invincible after so much coaching and spending of wealth for cricket development. My prediction proved wrong when natural born talent and domestic coach of Pakistan overruled every grammer and laptop coaching of the game.

Party Crashingggggg.... feel guilty to barge in the party(as an Indian).. but I want to celebrate too. To win 20/20 world cup a team has to be consistent... and Pakistan did that against all odds. We dont want mechanical robots coached by the book... we want a team like this, flavour of the east. A match winner, a game breaker, one man's talent... celebration of the human spirit over the other so called over worked/tired teams. This Pakistani team loved the game more than the other teams... for them sport is still a sport not a chore (like India). Sri lanka came second (after the attack they realised sport is sport and to enjoy). Finally.. Younis retired not because he is old, but because of the sort of fans we have in India and Pakistan. He is a human, a great cricketer (300 in test against Murali and Mendis)... dont loose him from test and one dayers too. He is a reluctant captain of a team which is unpredictable. Dont take his birth right away by immature expectitions. Let him live.

@Misbah-ul- Haq: Got to be the most relieved man.

@Shahid Afridi a.ka. Laala: For over a decade or so you have continued to shatter our hopes time and again… but now you have actually more than made up 4 your sins. Time to hail Laala..! we all love you 

@Fawad Alam: Very good fielder.

@UmarGul: Sarfraz Nawaz,Imran Khan,Wasim Akram,Waqar Younis,Shoaib AKhter and Umar Gul….You certainly are up there with the very best(fast bowlers) that we have produced over the years…

@Abdul Razzak: Nothing like winning it on the international stage. Welcome back!!!

@Saeej Ajmal: You have got the best “doosra”.

@Aamer: Hopefully the next Wasim Akram.

@Rest of the Squad: You all played your part.

@ Intekhaab Alam: Second time lucky! We won the 1992 World cup and you were the coach then as well.

@Aaqib Javed: Not new 4 u. Pak U-19 has won 2 world cups with you as coach.

@ International community: you ignore Pakistan cricket at your own “Peril”.

@ all: Love you all who are enjoying this rare moment of success.

@ Pakistani Nation: For a change enjoy 

May God bless Pakistan. amen.

HaMmy - take back your statement back dude you and few of the pakistani fans are saying we are jealous that pakistan won the match..nopes we supported pakistan all the way through..why do u guys indulge in mud sludging from both indian and pakistan side, read my previous articles we indians supported pakistan..Last time we won this time pakistan won after 9 months lets see who wins may be lanka..coming back to the match..as i wrote previously Dilshan was the key and when he got out for 0 i knew game set match pakistan anyways well played..it is sad younis khan retired, i guess shahid afridi should be the captain..In my book Shahid Afridi is the best leg spinner in the world and probably the best all rounder..but he should also deliver in the longer versions of the game..test and ODI if he does he will be remembered along with Gary Sobers as greatest all rounder..Kudos Pakistan

In this, we see the best of sport. Two countries that have been through a lot lately, valiantly battling in the final, with mutual respect and dignity. At home, there have been some tough times, but on the field and in the hearts of supporters a chance to escape; excitement that both sets of fans should be proud of.

Well done Sri Lanka; well done Pakistan.

Posted by: EAMiran at June 22, 2009 6:32 AM

Well done Pakistan - mission accomplished. Lanka fought hard but were CRUSHED by an emotionally charged juggernaut.
Hats off to Afridi who I have ridiculed throughout his long career for his brainless approach to cricket. A year and a half ago his bowling improved considerably. A week and a half ago he finally matured (mentally) as a batsman (we think?).From a pie-chucker and a walking wicket to a consistent match winner with bat or ball - Shahid Afridi - an unbelievable 13 years in the making. Now that was unpredictable.

Posted by: Rahul Soni at June 22, 2009 6:35 AM

Hey friends, i am an Indian. Firstly, congrats deep from the heart, for the amazing win. I seriously feel many a times that which two countries in the whole world has as many similarities as we Indians & you Paki's have? Same blood, same color, same living, etc. Yet no one has as conflicts as we both have. Ain't it sounds sick, ridiculious & leaves a question behind unanswered? And deep inside, i felt that the common people of both sides respect each other, loves to cherish it more...
Anyways i don't wanna get into cheap politics or what happened in IPL or that upcoming CL. Just wanted say congrats, dil se. For the people of Pak, & their whole team. Coz whatever happened there in recent past, definitely affected the cricket lover people, and there sentiments. Those who got nothing do to with it, got affected the most, & this cup is for you friends... You deserved it the most, brothers...!

Posted by: sanjeev at June 22, 2009 6:42 AM

Shahbaz S - again few of the pakistani who want to create trouble..I am sure Indians are not Shahbaz S your statement "Indians are crying babies" is wrong, it is racist, some of the articles who mere supporting Pakistan including me, few of the guys from both sides want to create a riff, why dont you just savour the moment and lets cricket be the victorious rather than politicians now pakistan needs to be consistent in the tests and the ODI.thanks

First of All Congratulations!to the Pakistan Cricket team. What a professional win. After a long time Pakistan team played like real champions. Its simply superb.Afridi's batting peaked at the right time.Fans will remember this win for a long time since pakistan team was rated underdogs until proven this magnificent win.
This win shows how pakistan team could be deadly if played to their true potential & as a unit.
Very WELL DONE !

Posted by: Pavan at June 22, 2009 6:53 AM

Congrats Pakistani team and the nation itself. First of all I dont know why some pakistanis target Indians i this forum. All Indians supported Pakistan to atleast come to the finals once we were out. You wouldnt realize it unless you are in India. Read our papers from the last 1 week and see how they were eulogizing the paki team.
Anyways, I feel pak team displayed a rare maturity and temperement in this series and thoroughly deserved to win. Bad luck sri lanka. I think Dilshan getting out and then the 2 frontline pace bowlers were the culprits.

First of all CONGRATS to Pakistani team and whole Pakistan. I am an Indian and it was one of the rarest time when i felt Happy on a Paki Victory.
You Guys truly deserved it. Its a lesson for Indian Team's arrogance, who despite having bestest of opputunities and exposure failed. There is no substitute of passion in a gmae. I belive Pakis are the most paaionate of all the teams which drove them to th Cup.

Congrats Again... Wish it brings a bulk of Happiness to the people of Pakistan and wish all Indians can also feel the same happiness in this vistory.

Congratulations to Pakistan.. This augurs well for world cricket.A cricketing world without a strong pakistani team is not a joy to watch.. We celebrate the return of the Titans.. As an Indian, I am happy that the trophy is just across the border and hope we reclaim it next year.. until then enjoy the well deserved glory.. The team had passion..and trust me India is happy for you..Please do not use this an oppurtunity for IPL bashing.. The moment is too significant for Pakistan to indulge in such pettiness.. I hope this acts as a precursor to sove the systemic problems in pakistani cricket..As a fan , I'd like to see more of Waqar's and Wasim's being unearthed out of pak for the sake of world cricket..And u have the answers Pakistan!!!

I have one small problem, is it becoz of hate that SANGAKAR did not praised the efforts of Pakisan. If it is true than Pakistan is going to have very very difficult time ahead of them. Please put some light on it and if possible write it on as why he did that. Look at Smith after defear what he has said and in contrast Lankans looks like deliberately skipped to mention even Pakistan.

Nice victor
Holland, then Ire Land and then not good enough for spin NZ and SA and then one bad day for SL. Good luck guy's otherwise your just reached the super 8 due to lack of experience of Netherlands.
But Luck is not all about the game. We definately will see what happen with you guys in Champions trophy. I suspect if they have players to bat whole 50 overs. Good team for gully cricket though.
AND FINALLY
Truth is always hard to digest.......

We also can not forget three wickets taken by Abdul Razzak who break the back bone of Sri lanka's Batting line up. In Fact emergence of Abdul razzk's in Pak team gave boost to Pak team's moral since he join pak team Pakistan did not loose any match in the tournament.Hope our team will keep up the same spirit in coming future.

Terex, this is not tukkaa. Blame ICC for making such Groups. Blame NewZealand for their injuries. Pakistan just played good cricket. Bring on any team in 50 overs & i am sure with such a talent PAKI POWER will PREVAIL. Inshallah. By the way it was a Warm-up (Practice) match played against India & everyone knows since not playing international cricket for longtime players were a bit rusty. Dear Kamran
Congrats to the whole nation on this glorius victory we surely deserve it. Afridi has shown what a big match player he can be if he puts his mind to it as if he plays like he did the semis and the final he can be the backbone of our one day and 20/20 team. The late Bob Wolmer had brought him in our Test Team also and i feel he surely deserves a chance to be back in the mix of it. Next trip to Srilanka and with their wickets am sure both afridi and ajmal will get a chance to run riot there. Lastly being the Gentlemen Kumar Sangakara is he should have atleast cogratulated Pakistan Team on this victory but i guess the pain of defeat was surely showing on him. No problems Kumar the whole world knows who is the Champion and who has the best bowling in 20/20. To all our indian friend especially Karan Singh hope you realize that its just a game and we should be wise enough to keep it at that as we have better and bigger issues than creating tension amongst our nations dear friend

Most of us in India are happy for the innocent people in Pakistan who have been suffering due to extremism. This victory could be a divine blessing for them...at least they can forget their troubles for a little while.

As for our team (since some of you inquired), don't worry, we should be alright after some rest. Good thing we have time off before the CT in SA. We supporters will be back to cheer again!

Pakistan, a Land of colourful people as in India, ever high emotions, country of residents with warm heart.

Though Younis could not escape rash views of many international cricketers & columnist when he coined t20 as fun, but in end it was fun campaign for the team. How much change this win can bring for countryland, is to be seen. I just hope this win can give the nation and its countryman a motive to move forward in PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

Let’s have party, let’s invite all guests

We going to wear fancy clothes
We are crown dressed

Let’s talk about the victory
Let’s have some jokes, some jests

The win doesn't come easy
You got to work hard, have some commitment, some lust

Don’t go over the limit, don’t do silly things
Its time to behave, don’t have arrest

Singh maybe king in Film world BUT in real world KHAN IS KING. Congrats. to Pak team. The turbalent times Pak nation and cricket team has gone through last few years, it is fitting they won it. Again as in 92, in fashion that you could say it was in their destiny (destiny has funny ways). Congrats to Sri Lanka team for putting up good show all the way, they fought brillinatly at the end to push the score to 138.

The win has bought cheer to millions in Pakistan and should be dedicated to them and the Pak army who are fighting gallantly in war which is not of Paksitan's making but America's bias & weak Pak leadeship.
Long live Pakistan... This nation is destined for Big things only if it adhers to the Mr Jinnah's motto of Unity, faith & discipline. There is something about Pakistan that constantly catches one's attention.

Brilliant Pakistan mubarak to all ! Whole world tried to isolate Pakistan from cricket morally and financially, look what happened ? You can isolate people by trying to gang up but you can never isolate sheer guts, raw talent and the resilience of the Pakistan nation !

Dhoni , Yuvraj , bhajji etc please do a bhangra dance now full of tears and better still get your cronies- Lalit Modi, Pawar , Shukla and others who tried to gang up against Pakistan TO JOIN YOU .

Mubarakbad Kamran and all Pakistan! Allah bless our homeland!I have in my 42 years of cricketing watching seen numerous great Pakistani victories but i have never felt so emotional as i did yesterday.Pakistan!Pakistan! Jeeway Jeeway Pakistan! When Hanif Mohammad defied the English bowlers to score his 187 not out at this ground in 1967 the press wrote *salute hanif the one man band*.To our prodigal son Afridi i give the same and wish he had matured earlier! Long live the spirit of Pakistan in our cricketers!.

Thank you all Indian supporters out there, we respect your sincere sentiments and yes we want this enmity over by every means.I know and you know it's not the common people who want chaos but having said that we need to play a vital role here to cool things off, we have got to show the world that we respect each other's emotions and freedom, only that's the way to move forwards. We need to realize the significance of such a change for the generations to come, it's time we took the first step by showing support to each other at the public level when the politics around is ruining matters. It's a truth we cannot live together because our basic ideology is different but we can of course live as good neighbors and mind our own business, this would at least not develop any harsh feelings towards one another.

Thanks again,
PAKISTAN ZAINDABAD..
CONGRATULATIONS PAKISTAN,, we did it!!

Hats of to the Pakistan team on playing brilliant Cricket. Sad to see them not in the Champions league...Wish this gives way to sanity and better relationships and apprceciation of the larger picture from the radical sections of the nation that do not want Pakistan or for that matter India to prosper. Just imagine the picture if the bulk of the superb Srilankan team has been unavailable due to the unfortunate attacks. The subcontinental team played with flair and poisse that showed that Twenty-20 need not be won on laptops and planning alone. Sadly India missed out the party this time due to excessive cricket or over-indulgence in non-cricketing things after a world cup victory. But the tournament nonetheless had a great finish with the best two teams battling out for a superb finish.

There is still hope for a little romance afterall!! No hopers to world champions!! Wow!I hail from India and in the bottom of my heart resides a deep anger against Pakistan. But yesterday I was cheering for Pakistan. For a nation so ridden with war, poverty and despair this was the ultimate tonic. Not that people would get three meals everyday because of this victory but it just alleviates the pain that stays within. Congrats Younis Khan!! And I must say that Afridi has made up for a lifetime for underachivement!! Congrats to every single Pakistani

Yes we lost a few battles, but we won the war. When the history books are written this is what will matter.

others are always quick to dismiss us, always quick to mock us, always quick to critsise us, even though we came into the competition as the finalist of 2007 and currently the best 20/20 side on record, well, no more, as one prominent comentator has said - 'write off Pakistan at your own peril'

Guys i think Razzaq and the new kid Amir helped us to win. if we think bout it, Sir lanka's 4 top bats men make over 80% of thir score, Razzaq and Amir took 3 of them out, and if they had stayed the total would have been much bigger, and we won in the last over. BUT we won. credit to all the players

The most beautiful gift that you could give to a nation. Thank you Team Pakistan!!

A nation that is fighting the war on terror, the nation that suffered the most, the nation that paid the heaviest price.....that nation has sparked, that nation has united and may this be the impetus to recovery and all great things!!

At times like this you suddenly realise who are your friends and foes and for Pakistan's sake i hope we all remember this. IPL and the Champions League will never be the same. The attempt of isolation has brought the best in us. We are now the World Champions and on behalf of the 170 Million Pakistanis i thank our cricket team again for this most beautiful gift.

I would like to thank the Pakistani team for the gift they have given us.This is because of their hard work as well as the prayers of the whole nation.I would also like to thank the Pakistani fans who were there at the grounds match after match and made such an electrifying atmosphere for the team to play in.Every member of the team is a gem.
What I as a Pakistani is more excited about is the future of Pakistani cricket which surely looks bright! After the 1992 glory came a decade in which Pakistani team had some of its best years[although history might disagree as we did not win anything major in that time but still].InshAllah something like that will again happen and we will see some players reaching the status like that of the greats Wasim and Waqar.

salman well said man well said indeed!!!, now, it is proved IPL is only for money, and sponcership, it has no connection with grooming the players, making them more professionals, i as a pakistani fan say that, now even if pakistani players are urged by the BCCI, to play the league, they must refuse at once. their real honour lies playing for their country and their country only, they should not indulge in cheap stuffs like maney making IPL. after this world cup, IPL will be badly reputed. indians say, they are the best team, the greatest blow to them would be to ignore them completely and not to play matches with them!!!

This victory should shun any efforts by the "clouters" to keep cricket away from Pakistan. A big thank you to Team Pakistan for gifting their nation with the most unbelievable of presents. This victory is precious; we cherish it and we'll always respect and love the stars of our team for this. It's poetic justice that Pakistan are the winners of this trophy after what the country has been through all this time, and after the isolation our cricketers had been pushed into.

Thank you, Team Pakistan, thank you..And 'Boom Boom Afridi!!'

It wasn’t a team, neither a cricket match nor a win, It was a nation, working hard to prove that together they can.
I have never seen a nation so much happy, proud and confident as we were last night. It’s the most difficult times we are going through and I believe it’s only Pakistani nation, who can rise above all this.
Dear Pakistani brothers and sisters, inside and outside Pakistan, Please keep this spirit high in all times to come.
We are brave, proud, honest and hard working 17 Millions , all we need is good leadership, direction and Unity. We found all three ingredients yesterday and won.
So please come forward, wherever you are , whatever you are doing, In all pitches of life prove again that together We can!
Thanks to Mr Kamran Abbasi for writing so good for Pakistan.
Congratulation to all Pakistan and please don’t stop here. We need a peaceful, developed, and secure Pakistan.

Responding to Shoaib Abbasi: Let me tell you that most Indians are feeling as elated and satisfied, if not more, than our pakistani bros, from this glorious Afridi-inspired victory. Lets not waste this opportunity to keep the brotherhood and spirit alive. We know that the majority of us want long-lasting peace, harmony and economic prosperity on both sides of the border. We know that the majority of us hate terrrorism in any part of the world, in any shape, way or form. But unfortunately, its the crooked rich, powerful, influential minority that always seems to have the upper hand, and achieves its purpose on the divide and rule philosophy. To be continued...

Posted by: Kumar at June 22, 2009 4:25 PM

Continuation to my prev comment: The pakistani team gave a great opportunity to believe in the power of unity and team work. I respect Allah as much as I respect Eeshwar. But take some concrete steps to rebuild your nation for good(I am the first one to admit we that we are not a perfect nation, no one is, but I can proudly say we did well in the last 50 years and are on the right path). Kick the religious fanatics out, annihilate the taliban/al-qaeda/LeT etc either Afridi style or Gandhi style.. you have to do it by yourself, as a people, there is not much others can do from outside, than offer support. And for God's sake find a stable govt/democracy, you guys have the ability, just do it. Just like the powerful lawyers lobby, there can a powerful student lobby or activist lobby with a die-hard positive attitude to rebuild the nation no matter what. China is expected to overtake the U.S by 2027. India won't be too far behind, and I don't want my beloved neighbors to fall behind as wel

Afridi should have been the player of the tournament. His wicket taking bowling, stunning fielding and awesome batting (especially in the last two games)could have made him the most all-round performer and the star of the tournament. No doubt, Dilshan was excellent in his batting. But the star performer was none other ther than Afridi.

Posted by: Aziz South African at June 22, 2009 6:07 PM

I am dissapointed at Sangakarras failure to congratulate Pakistan at the presentation. Instead he went about gloating on SRL lANKA having the best bowling attack in the world. The tournament statistics reveal another story though. For Pakistan, the prestige of being crowned champions is going to bring about massive and intense rivalries going forward. Sanga's boast of his attack being the best and his failure to acknowledge the better team is not acceptable. True, he played well, only after the top order were blown away. Pakistan only lost 2 wickets against ' THE BEST BOWLING ATTACK'. No doubt Sri Lanka are a good team but certainly not the best considering the margin of victory.

We are not only enjoy the thing that we won world cup but also that India lost all three matches in qualifying round so we are happy two times more. Why they are not dancing like in one match they were doing the same thing.
Sher Khan Afridi proved himself not as a bowler but also as a batsman. Younis Khan also proved himself as a Captain and also batsman too. Whole team played very well and outclass first Africa and then Sri Lanka.

Posted by: Irfan at June 22, 2009 6:38 PM

Nice one Kamran! You certainly closed this piece with aplomb. Likely the effect of the impassioned plea by Younis won't bring teams to Pakistan but they certainly will be moved by it. The humanity of it was to dedicate the win to Bob! That must have touched a lot of hearts. As Imran pleaded for his hospital after the world cup win, so did Younis for the honor of the country. This tournament let us all witness; the process of a player evolving as a captain, adapting to the needs of a newer format meanwhile shouldering his responsibilities. Younis it seems is a people’s person his real strength lies in managing the players, binding them into a cohesive fighting unit better than anybody else. What makes it more strange is that a Pakistani player is not afraid to speak his mind! And that too in English! As we all know that to some in the past has been a real joy killer. He has set a benchmark on which the next captain will be judged against, and I am not talking about the win only!

Posted by: sanjeev at June 22, 2009 7:11 PM

well shahid afridi was given "Man of the match" award, but lemme tell you T-20 is a batsmen game, bowlers are mostly under the hammers, the backbone of the lankan batting was broken by Razzaq so he should have been the Man of the match. Imp points of the match.
(1) getting dilshan out for 0
(2) razzaq's 3 wickets
(3) blazing start by Akmal esp when shahnawaj was not hitting the ball that well
(4) spirited bowling and well compiled innings by Shahid Afridi and support by shoaib mallik

Lesson for Pakistan.
when lanka were 70 for 6 pakistan should have gone for the kill, in the end they scored heavily in the last 5 overs. In future pakistan should take care of the last 5 overs
all in all well played pakistan
all the best for SL tour
and now the next big thing is the champion's trophy to be held in SA fingers crossed
thanks

Congrats to the whole nation. I just want to remind some of my fellow countrymen to follow the vice of grace in defeat and humility in victory. Let us enjoy the moment but please don't make this into an Indian bashing session. A lot of Indians are good cricket supporters and supported the team which they liked. I hope this victory fuels the loyalty in other areas that if we, as a nation, put selfless efforts towards any cause in our country, we would achieve it, Inshallah. This victory, in the end, has shown that Pakistan is still a cricket force to be reckoned with!

You sensed the scene was set when the Black Eyed Peas came out with the
track "Boom Boom Pow"

Enter Afridi the gladiator, swaying his mighty bat and when he has
completed the kill he stands in the middle of the arena arm lofted playing
to the blood thirsty crowds. Surely when Afridi is in that pose, arms
raised, beaming smile, chest out.....you sense that he is about to come out
with the lines..........

"I am Sahibzada Mohammad Shahid Khan Afridi. General to the armies of the
North West. A loyal servant to Younus Khan, the real captain of Pakistan.
Obedient son of a wounded nation, friend of a dead coach, and I will have
my vengeance in this T20 match"

And the vengeance was there, delvering a mature innings he was the real star

"I like that boom boom pow
Them chicks is jackin my style
They try to copy my swagger"

Balle Balle what swagger !!

From the cornered tigers of the 1992 world cup to Afridi the lion in 2009,
the fighting instincts of the Pakistani cricket team lives on.

@ Amit
India reached the super eights by beating bangladesh and Ireland (what an acheivement). And as far as pakistan batting is concerned, I think India should concentrate more on its batting. In super eights West Indies and England bounced them out, and South Africa spin them out. Wah what a batting line up, all filled with paper tigers. So Mr. Amit you should keep your house in order. Your team has only two victories in the whole tournament and that against Bangladesh and Ireland.

Very well done Pakistan! Congratulations to all Pakistanis and cricket fans. I also hope that paksitan gets on the way of showing some predictability from now on. The passion, and strategy as displayed today must go hand in hand!

Posted by: Abhyuday at June 23, 2009 3:25 AM

I congratulate Pakistan on the win. Something to be happy about after months of turmoil. But one thing I would remind the paki fans is that just because India lost out, it doesnot make them losers. They have performed consistently both home and away in all formats of the game for the last three years. Just one bad tournament doesnot make them "losers" as some paki fans would like to believe. Enjoy your moment of glory, but don't insult other good teams. Have you already forgotten how many Indians rooted for you before the finals?

Posted by: Roshan at June 23, 2009 5:09 AM

Aziz South African - I do not think the Sangakkara missed out on congratulating Pakistan deliberately. If you listened to the interview the question posed on him and maybe the sheer disappointment of losing a match Sri Lanka should have won led him to forget his part. He is normally very diplomatic and so much the gentleman. So pls do not hold any grudges against him. In Sri Lanka the general thinking was that if Sri Lankan cannot win then let it be Pakistan.
As for his saying that SL has the best bowling attack - of course its true. Just because they could not defend a paltry 138 on a good ptch doesn't mean they are not so. If you saw the match there were many close calls and skiers, including off Afridi early on which on another would have been catches. When the target is that low batsmen are rarely under pressure as they know that on a good pitch someone will stay on. Sri Lanka were the best team but the law of averages came up. Pakistan were the better team on the day thats it.

It was a great tournament and thanks to ICC for conducting the championship every one loved and enjoyed for its quick matches full of excitement and unpredictability. I also like to congratulate Pakistan's team for winning this championship by bringing the Cricket Giants down mostly due to strong self belief and emerging as dynamic team at the right place and at the right time. Individual players like Afridi, Razzaq, Gul, Akmal, Younis, Ajmal, and Malik played the major role while players like Misbah, Amar, Fawad, Shazaib, and Butt, made this possible with their contributions.

Posted by: Waqas at June 23, 2009 1:31 PM

I appeal to all the Pakistani's to stand always with Sri Lanka, coz they are the only one who stood with us in difficult times and the Sri Lankan are very friendly and peace loving unlike other country who have deep hatred towards us, even their media is not covering any thing about the Pakistan victory! Sri Lanka and its peoples will always hold special place in my heart and i will always salute them. Long live the friendship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. :D

Wel Done Pakistan! But here i can see that everybody forget the the real hero of Pakistan team. All credit goes to one and only Abdul Razzak who change in body language in Pakistan Team! Well Done Abdul Razzak! Well Done!

I would like to congratulate our Pakistani team for winning this WC & proving to the world that stop under estimating us. Once again we have proved & shown the world that we are THE BEST. Now my only request to our team is to play in the same manner as they played in T20 WC and a humble request to our PCB not to interfere or change this team for NOW. In last once again I would like to thank our team for giving us such a beautiful gift and making us proud.....PAKISTAN ZINDABAD

First of all many thanks to all Indian friends who have wished well for the Pakistan team. Secondly, I as a Pakistani cricket fan have a lot of admiration of Indian cricket, so please, don't think that we don't support or praise India. A good player is a good player; Sachin, Dravid, Kapil, Gavaskar are absolutely world class. I wouldn't say the same for many other Indian players. But I wouldn' say the same for many Pakistan players either.
Now, I'd request my Indian brothers to answer the posts up there where someone has accused Pakistan of ball tampering (Vikram). And then someone has classified Pak as a gully team that is not good for 50 overs.
Most followers in Pakistan know that this is an unpredictable side. There is a lot of politics, inconsistency of policies and what not that has kept the team from becoming a consistent world-beater. As far as talent goes, they are second to none (in fielding they have always been below the others). Hopefully things turn around for Pakistan

Posted by: AzIz South African at June 23, 2009 4:10 PM

Roshan. No grudges are held against Sangakarra. It was merely an obsevation that a losing captain always finds a few words for the opposition. I understand the dissapointment that he felt, and i appreciate your efforts to point this out. Both these teams are great friends of each other, and it was fitting that they had to contest the final. Pakistan bowling is just as strong, and so is South Africa's. Who knows what the outcome of a S.A./S.L. might have been? The fact is Pakistan bowlers performed one or two gears higher than both the Sri Lankan and South African attacks. That in my book made Gul, Afridi, Ajmal,Razzaq and young Amir the best attack of the tournament. And it is because of this Sri Lanka were prevented from posting a higher target in a match I dont beleive Sri Lanka should have won as you mentioned. Truth is Afridi, Akmal and Malik were hardly troubled and a few skiers ended up on the boundary. S/L too are a team I support and you are my friend. Good luck next time!

Posted by: khalil at June 23, 2009 7:29 PM

Cricket is an unpredictable game but our team is more unpredictable than the game.It is this unpredictability of our team that the other teams are wary of.They can do the un - thinkable either way, good or bad.In both cases they will give you a heart attack. This is the reason our team oscillates in the ranking table up & down.

Posted by: Naveed Shehzad at June 24, 2009 2:05 AM

It was a great sight to see Pakistan win. I would like to extend my thanks to all the "Non Pakistani" fans (especially indians) who have been with the team, and this has helped for our morale as well.
I was a bit disappointed on the exit of India because everybody loves to see yuvi and dhoni in full swing, but it didn't happened. Better luck next time.

Posted by: a proud pakistani at June 24, 2009 5:01 AM

another important thing to notice is that pakistani players have already made more than what they would have made in IPL.

500,000 for winning final
abt 250,000 for group matches and semi-final
2,000,000 bonus already announced by President of pakistan
im guessing PCB is gonna give them some money as well.
500,000 bonus announced by chief-minister of sindh
plus now they are gonna get tons of advertising contracts
bunch of other bonuses from other ppl
all in all, im guessing they will get about 6-10 million dollars for 2+ week show

yo IPL show-offs! can u beat this?

Hellos:
I am from India. I have enormous respect for Akram and Younis. We are cricket fanatics and so like anyone who is a performer. A British consulting collegue of me in India, told me that Akram and Yonuis tampered with the ball. MY only question him was "How come your English umpires never ever noticed it when the 2 W's played in your own league? How come your county's raved at their skills then? And not now when your English side got thrashed". That convinced my British friend and we bacame very good friends. Let Umar Gul keep performing. Everyone will shut up. Pakistani fans must fight PCB and tell them to use the greats of the past in building a strong cricket culture in your place. Your team won despite the PCB and not because of it. And finally the love affair with the foreign coaches must end for India and Pakistan. Pak players must be paid well. PCB gives a damn about the players when the team loses. So, they will and should play IPL and earn well and self sufficient.

Hello Kamran, where is my post. I did not do anything wrong. Give me the right to rejoice this victory alongwith oters.

Posted by: India fan at June 24, 2009 7:22 PM

Congratulations to Pakistan and it's team. It was really unbelievable effort from the players.
few points -
(1) Even though lot of players contributed in the victory, pakistan team got benefited largely because of inclusion of Abdul razzaq, without him, it would have been very difficult.
Even though, pakistan is champion, it does not mean other team should visit pakistan now. playing cricket, winning matches is different thing and taking care of foreign teams on your soil is other thing. nobody is questioning pakistan team's capability, it is pak govt and pak cricket board's job to take responsibility.
- afridi should not complain about next ICC T20 being held in 9 months. Didn't he know before the series began? What if pakistan had lost the final, wouldn't they want to play next one asap?
In the history of cricket pakistan will be remembered as 2009 winner. 9 months or 2 years is not the point.
I am very happy for pakistan people and enjoy your moment.

Posted by: Andrew G at June 25, 2009 4:19 AM

Congratulations Pakistan. Since 20/20 has been played internationally you have been the best team. I must say I found interesting that most of the star performers have over the years copped a "flogging" from people commenting on this blog.

Posted by: N Khan at June 25, 2009 7:35 PM

Fantastic achie vement! Congratulation to Pakistan! World Champions after 17 years! Its was truly a lollywood script where the hero gets beaten at the start and ends up winning and a happy ending indeed!!!

Afridi was a one-man army in the true sense, bossing the semi-final and final. There just was no way to stop him. He is truly a cut above world class when he is in this form!

Although I agree that pakistan has only 9 months to savor this win. They should now aim to win the next Twenty20 in 2010 and then the WC 2011. Why Not? The Twenty20 2010 is on for sure as they are the specialists with by far the best win:loss record. The World Cup may be 2 years away, but leaving Pakistan out of the IPL and cancelling more tours will stir that cornered tiger again!

So World Beware! ROOARR!

Posted by: Maza786 at June 26, 2009 11:26 AM

The atmosphere was electrifying. The crowd was largely populated by energetic Pakistani supporters, here with a determined desire of getting across the line and repeating that magical day in 1992. “ Afridi Afridi” they chanted away and oh boy he didn’t fail to live up to the expectations as Pakistan clinched glory to the pleasure of the entire nation. This is a cause of celebration and acknowledgement. The reaction back home has been fulfilled with happiness. Certainly this is a moment one shall cherish for a long time to come.

Posted by: Milan at June 26, 2009 12:07 PM

so, Pakistan are the world champions. Congratulations to the players who made it possible. They are the real heroes. Heroes in the sense that they made the country proud, laugh, enjoy.Everybody knows situation is not going well in Pakistan but atleast the people can cheer for next 9 months as world champions.
To get all the nation invloved in a certain thing is not easy at all but they did.
Mohammad Ameer is the real find for Pakistan as he reminds me of the Great Wasim Bhai.
Afridi shows cricket is not just power game by his two matchwining sensible innings.
Gul is the best T20 bowler.
There are many things going right for Pakistan now.
Hope they keep in the momentum and crash Sri Lanka their home cause its been a while Pakistan has beaten a good team away from home.
All the best Pakistan

Dear Kamran Abbasi,

I live in Ottawa, Canada and follow cricket and yr columns regularly.

For some time I have been thinking to propose a 'symbolic' name for our team. As you know we have kiwis, protease, etc.

For my beloved team I am thinking a name of "The Greens"

Or green tigers, or tigers. Since you can write and make this name popular, I am sending you this request through cricinfo blog
