Ijaz Butt is a negative influence true, but to defend Afridi is also illogical. What is the guarantee that this man will not eat cricket balls, tamper with them, shoot of his mouth again and again? The "big hearted" Pakistanis seem to have been too small in finding a place for Afridi. No sympathies there.

We always criticize the PCB if they appear weak in punishing the players. However, when they do disciplined the player we change our stance instantly and start blaming the PCB for being too hard on players. Damn you do and Damn if you dont. We need to make up our own mind.

To the point of afridi he has been treated really unfairly to deprive him of playing for Hampshire for speaking his mind, sums up the whole of Pakistan. Speakng up against wrongs and injustice is punished, while ruling without being accountable for mistakes is accepted. I agree the time for butt to leave has now come and to put someone with a history in cricket in charge e.g imran khan, inzamam ul-haq etc. For Pakistan cricket to be a coherent and professional setup all political influences should be eradicated. Cricket is a sport and a passion of the people not something that should be manipulated by politicians. 2 things should come out of this; first afridi allowed to playfor Hampshire and second the removal of butt.

Its really excruciating that someone like Ijaz Butt is allowed to continue in an important job like heading Pakistan cricket when he's barely competent enough to be a pencil pusher in a municipal office. Its not surprising though...given that most of the people we have in important public offices are equally or more incompetent.

Ijaz Butt is not an isolated problem but merely a symptom of a wider one. As long as the larger problem exists, the person to replace him will merely be a different flavour unless we have exceptional luck.

In short, Pakistan cricket is condemned to muddle along for the foreseable future.

Mr. Abbasi - as an Indian, I feel sad to see what has been happenning to Cricket in Pakistan, over the last 3-4 years. As if the issues of playing 'home' matches out of 'neutral' countries is not enough, the players have to contend with people like Ijaz Bhat. India too had its share of tyrant-adminstrators like Jagmohan Dalmiya, Lalit Modi - but, at a tipping point the governing environment reacted to weed them out. Why is Pakistan not ensuring such an environment? Because, if you dont, even if this Ijaz Bhat chap goes, another one may emerge tomorrow to haunt your sport and sportsmen/sport-lovers!!! In my opinion everything that happened in the semi final of the world cup was because of Mr Butt (lost on purpose for money) and everything associated with spot fixing is also because of Mr Butt. Experiences show that each and every time the nation has asked for removal of some one from being the head of this state or any national institution, we have been given even the worst alternative. Let's leave Ejaz Butt to a side for a moment. Mr. Abbasi have you ever else where seen such type of players with illitrate, childish, corrupt and non-diplomatic behaviour. This is same Afridi who was eating cricket ball on open screen, Had a big issue with Younis Khan which kept younis out for 8 months, Opened his mouth on return from the WC and destroyed the people-to-people goodwill which was being created between Pakistan and India, left the test team after first test in England and lot more but nobody punished him. He wants to be permanent captain but he is not ready to see his faults, not in his personality not his approach to the game. He is very much capable of contributing in Pakistan's batting but the man is stubborn and doesn't want to change his approach. He will go in the middle, try to hit every ball in to the skies even if he goes on to loose his wicket for 100 consective times. He recent approach in media is childlike and stupid.

The best way is that Pakistan should change its team selection and leader role to the coach. Just like in football. You need a father figure coach for these guys. A strict leader like Shane Warne and the captain should just do what he is asked to do.

How can they forget that u got the fastest hundred in the world, A poor pakistan team qualify in semifinal in world cup to take highest wicket helpful moment. Here's my take on this all - Afridi knows exactly what he's doing. He's realized the obvious that Butt needs to go for the sake of Pakistan cricket, and he's deducted that this is the only way to get rid of Butt, thus putting this daunting task all upon himself, counting on the intense support by the fans he's got. He obviously knew beforehand the fact that once he were to kickstart this mess his NOCs for the participation in the Lankan and English Premier Leagues were to be withdrawn right away, by Mr Butt who were to responsively be looking to indirectly threaten Afridi of his power, so the latter just used it as a trap card, flighting one right up and provoking Mr Butt to foolishly expose his true colours of abusing power to the world. Hallelujah, so far so good. A zero to Ijaz Butt and a +1 to Afridi. Looking forward to how this game pans out x)

The problem is way Cricket is run in Pakistan. If it was just Mr Butt, i would back up Afridi and ask for Butt to step down..its Mr Zardari who selects the big shot of pcb and make money of it. Cricket has no place for politics...I ask for independent cricket board so the president of PCB is elected through regional elections.

No question about BUTT being real pain in the Butt. But I think Afridi isn't better in any sense. His big open mouth has put him on back foot many a times. Thats what happened on his return from WC and thats what is happening now. He will lay down as usual when he finds the outcome of his acts. He should have respected Waqar Younis, who is senior to him and unlike a bit and peices player like Afridi, is one of the greatest in cricket history.

i am missing something, after the verdict from most of the cricker lovers in the world and Pakistan , speaking in favour of Afridi and lashing out at PCB and especially Mr BUTT, what it will take for Mr Zardari to remove him, may be he hold some thing against Zardari and that may be the reason that Mr BUTT behaving as if he is the KING AND NOT chairman of PCB.

I think afridi did the right thing by quitting.I would give afridi a lot of credit by putting his career at stake to let the world know the affairs of pcb which is run by an inefficient,arrogant oldie who played very little cricket and is bent on spoiling the careers of many great players.Afridi is the most popular player in pakistan and even in australia he was voted the most popular player.He is very true when he says that pcb humiliated him.The fact of the matter is pak is the only country in the world where the captain is announced after the team is selected without taking any input from the captain and the coach.The president should immediately interfere and sack ejaz butt and ask afridi to rejoin the team as a captain.

I don't know whats the fuss about. Afridi is extremely lucky to play 300+ ODIs infact he is very ordinary batsmen, average bowler, excellent fielder. It is not enough!! he is not allrounder, not batsmen, not bowler, just good fielder

We all know how bad BUTT is but Afridi is nothing but a mediocre player. He cant bat more than 5 balls and his bowling is not good enough to keep him in the side solely for his bowling. Yes he was the leading wicket taker in the WC but most of his wickets came from sub par teams (Canada, Kenya) SL was an exception.

I blame the pakistani ppl for making guys like Afridi as their heroes because of his one century in one and a half decade.

@ Mohammad Tarikul Islam and like-minded others:
1.Imran in test cricket averaged in the high 30's with the bat and low 20's with the ball (low 30's and mid 20's with bat and ball respectively in 0DI's).
2. Wasim Akram averaged in the low 20's with the ball in both Tests and ODIs.
3. Miandad averaged 50+ and 40+ with the bat in Tests and ODIs respectively.
4. Inzimam averaged around 50 and 40 with the bat in Tests and ODI's respectively.
All of the above were consistent performers for Pakistan.

Afridi on the other hand averages in the mid 30's with the bat and ball in Tests and low 20's with the bat and mid 30's with the ball in ODI's. Consistency is also not his forte.
With those figures he is only a legend in your (collective) hive minds.

@Sanam - U may think he is not an allrounder but he is always rated among the best allrounders.If he is an average bowler than why he was the best bowler in the world cup(among zaheer,harbhajan,murli,swann and others).He is the most consistent bowler for pak in the last three years.I understand he is not consistent in batting but when in form he is the most destructive batsman in the history of cricket with an amazing strike rate of 113 even after playing 300 odd matches and five of his centuries are in the fastest ten centuries of all time.Whether u like him or not people all over the world come to watch him in action.It is unfortunate that the head of pcb is an arrogant idiot who was humiliating afridi for the last six months and one should not blame afridi for retiring prematurely.Ejaz butt is responsible for all the problems and should be asked to stay home with his grand kids and afridi should be reinstated as captain @ the earliest.

afridi is an average player but an excellent leader,he guided the team into semi finals of WC. if we look at the history we come to know that pak cricket had suffered alot not due to our players but due to pathetic politics in PCB, Ijaz butt must be removed as early as possible and board should comprise of minimum members possible so that their personal issues may not spoil us anymore!

What I fail to understand is why is everybody pointing fingers at Ejaz Butt. What most people including you Mr.Abbasi should realise that Ejaz Butt is trying to kill player power which has been the main reason Pakistan cricket has slumped to new depths. It is this player power which led to Younis Khan resigning from captaincy back in Oct/Nov 2009. All these players Malik, Yousuf, Afridi, Rana Naved etc etc revolted against him and drove him out of the team which resulted in them failing to win a series in NZ (Nov 09) and being whitewashed downunder. Afridi just like others was hungry for power. What kind of a person comes out in media and says the reason I didnt do well on this tour was because I wanted rest and I only toured because my friends and family forced me to. If I was the PCB Chairman I would sack him there and then. Good job Ejaz Butt!!

Mr. Ijaj Butt is damaging the PCB and it is getting worsened day by day, I believe that most of the board members are corrupt to their neck. I do not agree with your views. I am not a fan of this Cricket Board but, in this particular episode, they have done the right thing. A Cricket Captain critizing tour management, (while the tour is still on) and then provoking regional differences is not on. Irrespective of the motives of Cricket Board in 1) revoking Afridi's NOC and 2) initiating disciplinary hearing, they are right moves. Pakistan cricket needs players to be disciplined and know when and what to criticize.

Am bit disappointed that you have opted for populist line than an objective one. To clarify, I am from Karachi and a great Javed Miandad fan. He had genuine grievances but he also crossed the line on occassions, which a personality of his stature should not have.

Shahid Khan is a most popular player in in the world. mr. ejaz but who is? i think 10 percent people know in pakistan he is chairman pcb. i request President Pakistan, Prime Minister of Pakistan and Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, President PML N resolved for this mater and mr. but out for his home sweet home and eating seri pay.

As has been observed by many readers,the problem lies with PCB and not Pakistani cricketers. I have never liked Afridi until I saw the way he performed and conducted himself in the recent world cup.Dont make a mistake by beleiving that Pakistan would have reached the SF of the world cup without Afridi.I would love to watch cricket matches between Pakistan and India but for that to happen PCB's first initiative will have to be to get rid of BUTT,the monster.

With the current stand-off between Butt and Afridi, something has to give in, hopefully, for the benefit of PAK's cricket. I personally did not like Afridi's conditional retirement as it sets a bad precedent. He could still have requested for top authorities to intervene without this fracas.

I completely agree with you! For all the Afridi bashers, try to play cricket at the international level and then try to say that Afridi is average anything. Also, here are a few truths about him. He is loyal to Pakistan beyond words having batted at virtually every place from opener to tail ender. He has always answered the call of his country as he is shuttled in and out of the team. He has always placed the country first as he did by retiring from test cricket. He is a fighter and taught our teams to fight till the last ball. i read almost all of the comments above, i see the problem in both of them, Mr.Butt a bigger one, Mr Afridi a smaller one, Mr Afridi should have never been selected as a captain, Mr Butt has been the worst to run PCB, how would you solve these problem as long you have Mr Zardari & Mr Jelani, look what they have done to the country PCB is a small fry, i do not see any good news coming out of pakistan soon, unless miracle happens.good luck

Afridi has been pakistan's one of the most brilliant cricketers and has never been nurtured well by either the PCB or some of their coaches.Javed Miandad who was once pak coach dropped afridi in matches against india and the result was they lost badly. Miandad those days would say that he does not like players like afridi and virender sehwag in the dressing room.The problem with some of these past cricketers is that they can not stand some of the present generation talented cricketers.Iam glad that BCCI did not give any post to gavaskar otherwise he would not have allowed sehwag to bloom.look at what vengsarker did to sehwag.Today's generation may not know that india had a hugely talented cricketer in surrender amarnath but raj singh dungarpur and gavaskar finished him

People are not supporting Afridi's bad deeds as its clear from the second sentence of the last paragraphe by the author, but instead they are supporting AFRIDI because they hate PCB administration particularly Ijaz But's dreadful policies. How PCB could punish the players for discipline when PCB itself has no discipline, no regulation???
We need a clean, responsible PCB and its Chairman, and then if they plan something to preserve cricket and cricketers by applying rules and regulation, of course, all of us will support them.

I really don't understand why Mr. Butt is kept as chairman while he doesn't have any great leadership nor management skills, Please send send him home to take some rest with his family, and let the great all-rounder play.
A good example of his poor decision making, during W/C Pakistan team had a bowling coach while the head coach was a bowler himself why it was so required to have a bowling coach (Aqib Javaid).

The calls for Ijaz Butt to go are absolutely justified. But Shahid Afridi needs to be brought back only as a player and not as captain. Misbah-ul-Haq should lead the side atleast for the next 12 to 18 month,and given a free hand.

While I agree with your opinion Kamran, I must say that Afridi has ruined his case and his reputation by using the kind of language he did. Butt must go, no doubt but to ensure that no player tries to be bigger than the game in future no matter what the circumstances are, Afridi should not be allowed to come back. The decision to revoke his NOCs should be overturned but he should be banned from representing Pakistan at the international level. Too often have we seen him breaching the code of conduct and if as a captain he was not able to realize that he needs to practice self-control when dealing with the media, he should be shown the door.

LOL!! No matter how many wickets Kaneria/Afridi takes, they are average bowlers. Shane warne will always be legend because of his bowling average. Saqlain has the ODI average of 21 (Legend) and Afridi has 35, now you ppl understand!!

Neither Saqlain and neither Shane warne was alrounder, they have average runs are below 10 as batting however Shahid afridi has more than 20 runs average, and so many time we won the match because of shahid afridi. please do not compare with below ranking players, compare him with Imran Khan.

I am really surprised @ some of the detractors of afridi.They is he is average player.Actually he is an extra ordinary player with 23 man of the match awards next only to inzamam 24 and saeed anwar 28.He is not consistent but he is a real match winner.Zaheer abbas,Amir sohail and salamn butt and some others always point out his batting flaws without mentioning any thing about his brilliant bowling and fielding.It is wrong to put the blame on just afridi for his sudden retirement as he was dejected with the constant humiliation @ the hands of pcb bosses.Instead of blaming afridi for violating the code of conduct the bunch of idiots in pcb should admit their mistakes and reinstate afridi as captain and end this policy of hate and favoritism.

BUTT Should go and Afridi should in....Afridi is not an average player he is gem...he has not been utilize properly...he should open inning in ODI and T20....he would be much distructive than Sehwag and Gilly. I wonder people are wasting his talent by keeping him lower down the order....Pakistan have won T20 only because he batted up in the order otherwise average becomes very high and Afridi gets out in hitting.

I think waqar & intikhab r playing games and r also responsible for the removal of afridi.As a matter of fact both of them have been praising afridi for his good captaincy for the last one year.I Have read the statement of waqar after his arrival that afridi is a good captain and there r no issues and now all of a sudden he became immature and a bad captain.During the wc inthikab gave a statement that afridi is captaining like imran khan.Waqar should listen to wasim's advice and should not interfere too much in the captain's job.The pcb instead of asking afridi for his tour report acted in haste and removed him from the captaincy.

"Afridi in, Butt out" Why? Afridi is being punished because of his behaviour. I am not a big fan of Butt but I'm with him on this one. Afridi not for the first time has violated rules and regulation and I think he should be punished to show that reckless behaviour is not to be tolerated if PCB is to have any creditabilty in international cricket.
