Fielder's eye view coming to you

Ever wondered what a fielder sees when he settles under a skier, or when the ball comes rocketing at him from a powerful shot? During the Champions League Twenty20, you might be able to share his vision.

The television broadcaster, ESPNstar, is planning to implant high-definition pinhole cameras in players’ sunglasses during the tournament, according to a report in the Times of India.

“The sunglasses will be handed to a player assigned by the team management just before the start of each innings with the recording mode on and the player will have to wear them for a period of three overs,” an official said.

How long until we get cameras in helmets? And will they withstand the impact of a Dale Steyn bouncer?

Sound check for Redbacks

Can there be such a thing as over-preparation? The Redbacks of South Australia, currently gearing up for the Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa, may be pushing the boundaries. They have apparently been training under “high intensity conditions” with the recorded noise of vuvuzelas blasting through the speakers during the sessions in Adelaide Oval’s Indoor Cricket centre. This, at a time when the rest of the sports world – rugby leading the way – is shrinking from the ear-splitting din of the monotonous plastic instrument, which drove players, backroom staff, the media and even fellow spectators to distraction during the World Cup. It’s unlikely the Champions League Twenty20 will experience that sort of noise level, if only because the crowds will be smaller. Still, the Redbacks are taking no chances and have scheduled their last vuvuzela training session on Tuesday. Overkill? They may yet have the last laugh – but it’s possible that they will first have very sore ears.

Monks, music and money

As cricket strives to increasingly become a global sport, so do the opening ceremonies of its marquee events. The launch of the Champions League Twenty20 at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore on October 8 will showcase the martial-art skills of China’s shaolin monks and Kerela’s kalaripayattu artists in what promises to be a glitzy and high-budget affair. The 30-minute ceremony will also feature Grammy winners Chaka Khan and Shaggy, along with well-known pop artist Jamelia. Also in the mix are Japanese drummers and dancers wearing yards of silks that will unfurl into the team flags. The CEO of the Champions League Twenty20 Sundar Raman said it would be at par with some of the best ceremonies seen on TV.

'Are you ready Hyderabad?'

If you enjoyed Rudi Koertzen’s voice booming around the Wanderers at the start of the IPL final asking spectators “Bullring are you ready? Gentlemen let’s play”, just wait till the Champions Twenty20 League starts in October. The umpires in the tournament played in India will be miked up to be heard by television audiences throughout the matches. So no more must you rely on lip-reading skills to hear who said “luck to you” to whom. However in a killjoy move the organisers have given umpires the option to switch off their mikes during the games. In case of an on-field confrontation, you may have to wait till players Twitter it or their publish tell-all autobiographies.
