Leaving out Vaas and Jayasuriya was emotional, says de Silva
Chaminda Vaas and Sanath Jayasuriya did not make Sri Lanka's final World Cup squad
© AFPAravinda de Silva, now Sri Lanka's chief selector, has admitted it was a tough and emotional decision to leave out his former team-mates Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas from the squad for the World Cup. The two experienced hands had been included in the 30 probables for the tournament but were left out from the final fifteen.
"It was a very difficult decision and a very emotional moment for me when it was decided that Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas have to be left out from the World Cup squad," de Silva wrote in the Times of India. "They've been my team-mates for such a long time and they are such fabulous players with great records."
de Silva played alongside both Vaas and Jayasuriya in Sri Lanka's successful World Cup campaign in 1996, but in his new role as selector, said he had to do what was best for the team. "At the end of the day, as a selector, I have to do the right thing. I have to pick 15 of the best available players on current form. Taking that into account, I don't think it would have been possible to include them."
I think Aravinda did the right thing and it is up to players to retire at the correct age without hanging and giving opportunity for young once. Then selectors can choose talented & right bunch easily without any difficulty & emotion. We can remember Pakistan played Javed Miandad for WC at the age of 40 but without any success. Rich people can buy everything from money but not the young age. Food, exercise, surgery are temporary measures to keep our outward appearance young but not the organs. Cricket is the game which needs synchronization of three organs eyes, legs and hands. At the age of 40 you can run well, act as a youngster but in reality those three organs not synchronized well and most elder players fails specially batsman due to this reason. Last two three years Jayasuriya fails frequently because above three organs not synchronized properly and ball marooned in the sky near the crease ant out easily. According to Buddhism everybody should understand one important feature of life, which is aging.
Well done Aravinda for your strength and honesty. It is a shame that the Aussie selectors didn't possess a similar amount of intestinal fortitude to cut Ponting and Clarke from this pathetic ageing team before the World Cup. Apparently form doesn't come into it when you play for Australia, it's all about contract money and big corporate dollars. Brett Lee is testament to that, hardly bowled a ball for 2 yrs and when he did it was rubbish, but appeared on every Weet Bix box in the country and still had the big ACB contract. Ponting reckons he's never seen the ball better..? He can't be serious. He hasn't scored a ton in any form of the game for over 400 days. Sri Lankan cricket will benefit from this hard but smart decision. Messrs Hilditch, Chappell & co, take note of A De Silva, he actually knows his job.
